So i didnt know where to put this but i thought it would get the most views here. I also dont know the right name for it so ill just call it screening

Does anyone know what screening can be done on embros when you have IVF? I am mostly wanting to know if they can test for the BRCA1 gene. The reason i ask is i was reading on the net they can test for cancer genes but it didnt say which ones or if they can test in NZ

I havent had my test yet but the gene is in my family

Wow that is heavy reading. I have no idea what type of screening is done sorry. There will be a standard type screening, but know when there is some kind of hereditary gene issue within families, more extensive screening is done. I'm not sure what NZ is capable of in the way of screening though. Perhaps the eggs would be sent overseas for testing.

Good luck with your appointment. I'm sure you will have all the answers you will need soon

If you ring your local IVF clinic, you could ask what they test for. It's called PGD and if you qualify for a round of IVF funded through the Government, some cover for PDG also.
We did IVF but had been trying for a while and then were on the waiting list for ages and then there was still another year to wait so we went private.
We were lucky enough to only do one cycle and we got pg first time with our first son and then recently gave birth to our second son with a frozen egg.
Good luck

it is called pre implantation genetic diagnosis.

it can be done, however, it would be very difficult to get approval for it to happen in New Zealand as the gene only predisposes you to breast cancer, it doesnt guarantee it as at the moment the ethics committee guidelines require having the gene to guarantee you having the disorder. if you test positive for the mutation, then I think that you can apply to the ethics committee to have screening undertaken. it will not be a quick or cheap process and you will be required to undergo counselling etc. if approval is declined then your only option would be to go overseas to have it done. I am not sure what Australia is like although I assume they would be similar to here, England is difficult also but America is one of the easier ones.

Due to the potential for gender selection, racial selection, discriminating against people with disabilities pgd is an ethical and politcal minefield which is why there are such stringent regulations regarding it.

From a quick google cost wise it is about $12000NZD for a PGD cycle and they still recommend having an amnio to confirm the embryo is disorder free as there are no guarantees.

Sorry if my post comes across all doom and gloom I did not mean it to. The first step is to get your test done to see if you have the gene and then progress from there. Best of luck.
