Hi Everyone,

Just wanting to get an idea on where people are putting their capsules these days? Behind the passenger or behind the driver?

Our parenting group has suggested the safest is in the middle, followed by behind the driver on the basis that the driver is intuitively more likely to protect their side of the vehicle.

Different decision when you have more than one child in the back as options probably dictated by how both can fit, but this is our first so we've only got one seat with the option of either behind passenger or driver...

We had our capsule in the middle, the when we changed to a car seat we pu it behind the passnger seat. We chose that side because we thought it was safer when getting ds in and out of the car.

The middle seems to be the safest place.
We've always had Hannah behind the passenger seat, mainly because it's on the kerb side if the car was parked on the side of the road - meaning we didn't have to contend with traffic to get her in/out. (Obviously you can go into the car from the kerb and get the capsule out from the middle).

We've since put Mason on that side and put Hannah on the other side. Once we get Mason out Hannah can climb across and out that door so she doesn't go on the road.

I always got told the middle was the least safest place to sit/for kids coz there is nothing to stop them going through the windscreen....not sure if this matters for a capsule though i guess.

The middle is the safest for rear facing seats, but only if it has the right kind of seat belt for your capsule model, which it often doesn't. Apparently the seat behind the passenger seat is the next safest, I think for the reason that mamapickle said, coz you don't have to contend with traffic when you're getting the capsule/baby out of the car. Plus, if you have a smaller car the seat will have to be pushed forward a bit, so you probably don't want the driver to be squashed up against the steering wheel!
Most places where you get capsules from, whether you are hiring or buying, should be able to fit it for you and they will be able to tell you where the safest place in your particular model of car is.

To begin with we had it behind the passenger, but was annoying as front seat had to be right forward, so we swapped to the middle which is heaps better and seems safer as well.

I had heard that the middle was the safest, followed by the passenger side.....

I've heard the middle is the safest BUT the drivers side is safest when driving because drivers are more likely to swerve away from anything and passenger side will get hit BUT also behind the passenger side because we drive on the LHS and usually park on the LHS and is safer for getting them in and out - if that makes sense!

I would have thought after the middle seat, the safest would be passenger's side, due to us driving on the left hand side, so if another car was the cross the centre line they would hit your drivers side. I also thought even if you were to swerve you'd likely swerve off the left of the road, so the drivers side would be more likely to be hit.
We have always had the carseat on the passenger's side as it is much easier to get her in and out.

I had mine in the middle, it was easy for us tho coz we have a 7 seater so it was at a good height so I could just lean in and click it into the base and then the bigger kids were either side of the seat which meant that they still both had a full seatbelt rather than a lapbelt.

When i went away with just me and the baby I moved him to the passenger side so i could use the rear view dragon mirror and have left him there for the same reason others have said which is its on the curb side of the car.

Thanks everyone,

Yes our seat is unfortunately one that can't go in the middle as it needs the full seat belt. Not concerned about the whole safer on the passenger side thing for getting in and out of the car as these days we'll either be up a driveway or at the mall at which point it doesn't really matter... might have to find the accident stats that support the claim that the drivers side is safer before we make the decision then. I think the most danger would come from being t-boned as opposed to someone crossing the centre lane so looks like I'm headed for the LTSA for more info :-)

I have Jae on the passenger side now that shes forward facing simply so I can see her without having to twist right around to se behind me. Plus as someone mentioned before, its on the kerbside. I would have thought behind drivers seat would be safer in crashes though as when we turn right (and therefore cross the path of incoming traffic) they arent going to get the full impact of any idiots who come speeding along. While she was in the capsule I had her either in front (I dont have airbags on that side) or directly behind me for the above reason.
