Topic: Vaccinations for prem babies Posted: 07 September 2010 at 2:24pm |
If you vaccinated your early baby, did you do it at the usual time or did you delay it by the amount of time they were early?
DS is due his first vaccinations next week but I dont know whether to delay them a bit.
He is going to be in daycare from 3 months so I do want to vaccinate.

Ashleigh was done according to her actual age. Her 6wk imms were done in hospital when she was only 2lb something!!

Callum's were delayed slightly until he got to a bigger weight. So they were about a month behind his actual age but ahead of his adjusted age (he was 8 weeks prem).
I think they advised waiting (and I was happy to wait) because they do the BCG at birth here and he couldn't have that till a bit later. Then they just carried on with the immunisation schedule from there, though we've delayed a couple of others (eg MMR) due to travel and C being unwell when they were due and his doctor was more than happy to do that as well. There's usually a "window" when they're recommended, it doesn't have to be the exact age the schedule suggested IYGWIM.

My DS's vaccinations were done from his actual age and he was an extreme prem. I'd check with your doctor and see what he/she says.

For us they made it clear in the NICU that it was the actual age, not adjusted age..

My first DD was 27+4 weeks and weighed in just under 1/2 a kilo. The only one they delayed was the Hep B at birth one, the rest were done at the actual age also.
