I am trying to decide whether to just get a good backpack thats comfy or whether i actually need a nappy bag......I wont be bottle feeding so i wont need insulated pockets etc, but is there any other advantage to a nappy bag that an ordinary bag wouldnt give??

I've got no idea LOL, I've never had a nappy bag! I use a jumbo handbag with lots of pockets, it does the job nicely and because I buy cheap handbags I have a bunch of different ones depending on what I want to wear and where I'm going (medium sized handbag for a quick trip to the supermarket or just down the road, jumbo handbag for a day out).

I got a nappy bag and ditched it and used either a backpack or a big handbag. Probably different if i was bottlefeeding, but yea no need while breastfeeding!

I have an oioi nappy bag and couldn't live without it - big comfy strap that is adjustable and goes on my shoulder, across the body or on the buggy; change mat, lots of pockets, wipes dispenser... and because it's black leather it goes with everything. I guess a big handbag would do the job as well, but when I looked at some and compared prices the nappy bags were similar price and more functional.

I haven't had to use any yet but I have bought two big handbags. I am going to buy a change mat to put in.

I will see how they go and if they don't work I'll get an actual nappy bag

A friend of mine just has a backpack and thinks it's great. Plus not being a baby bag it cost far less. She BF's but doesn't express so no need for the insulated pockets either but anyway if you changed you mind it's easy to pick up a insulated bottle holder to go in it.

The only thing I would recommend is make sure the backpack has a drawstring or zip etc. not just one of those go over the top flaps or else things might fall out if the bag topples.

But I have a proper nappy bag - cost around $100 so not cheap but one advantage is it comes with the change mat, wet bag etc and it does have lots of handy pockets in the inside to help keep things neat.

Never got a nappy bag and am super glad I didn't.. MIL has a thing about handbags so quite regularly sends me large ones from Italy which are fabulous (and stylish )

I remember in the early days thinking i needed to pack everything bar the kitchen sink - in fact these days a pack very little. Never taken a change mat, just pack a flat nappy, do BF so no bottles but have an insulated bottle bag if i take EBM.. like someone said in an earlier post, having several lady-bags means you can change which bag you use daily if need be

We have had both and with one kid a nappy bag was fine but I found it wasn't big enough for 2kids in cloth naps! So we have a $20 backpack from the warehouse and it works great. If I am just popping out for 1/2hr then I just tend to put thingsin a reuseable shopping bag.

I have about 5 bags which I use and none are nappy bags. I found oversized handbags just as good and I botttle feed!

I think nappy bags are quite expensive for what they are and I love the fact that I can change my baby bag to match my outfit

Lou I'm getting a backpack.

Like you I won't be bottle feeding and I can put in plastic bags for dirty nappies. I will possibly cary a single bottle and breast pump with me though for big days out so other people can feed for me if I need a sleep.

I have a large leather nappybag that I use as my handbag for work days (you can't tell it's a nappybag), and a nappy bag for home days - I just take out the change mat and bottle holder on work days. I adore my bag, it was hideously expensive but a birthday present, and if I can use it as a handbag for the next 5 years I think the price justifies it...

I have a thing for nappy bags & bought a few & spent heaps on them. My last pram was a Phil & Ted sports & I got a special bag that went in the basket & ended up using that as a nappy bag. I also had a back pack nappy bag which was great for when going on walks in the weekend & DH doesn't mind carrying that one, lol.

I refused to give up my handbag. I'd already given my body, my sleep, my breasts as a fun source of pleasure, blue cheese, wine, ham, my life as i knew it. You've got to keep something sacred.

People i know with nappy bags have them filled with stuff they hardly ever use. If we are going out i just take a nappy and wipes in a pouch like this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Baby-gear/Nappies-changing/Nappy-bags/auction-235156508.htm and food in a plastic zippy bag. Newborns don't need much. If we are going out all day or night Alex has his own backpack. Mostly we go out in the car or pram so i have the extra stuff in the car like hat, jacket, extra nappies.

We are just making do with a bag we already had as I refused to spend more money on something when we had hardly anything and HEAPS of bags lying round the house.

We are using a bodyglove satchel that DP bought from the warehouse a year or so ago as his "gym bag" for the gym membership he never uses! Its big enough for quite a few changes of clothes too many if you ask me lol but Ididn't pack the bag DP did. About 8nappies yes enough for a day yet again DP lol wipes muslins and the front pocket under the flap usually carries my wallet, dummy, keys, camera etc. I have it down to an art now as I am able to swing the bag over my shoulder and carry DD out of the car.
