when i am here in the lounge...DH and I had a bit of a disagreement about the playpen..I was under the impression that it was just to be used when I was not able to be in the lounge..ie I am having a shower or hanging out the washing.

It started off cause I said we should get something to go over the tape deck to stop her from opening it up. he then went on about having to move other stuff.

I basically said I do not want her in the playpen all the time..I do want her to have the chance to explore but at the time same we do still have to make sure the lounge is nice and safe.

I agree with you, she needs to be able to explore in a safe environment, that's how babies learn.

I tried putting the gremlins in a playpen once. They stood up and pushed it around the room...

lol our one is too heavy for me to move so cant imagine Megan moving it.

also she is awake more during the day so would be unfair for her ot be in for 2-3 hours at time.15-20minutes while i hang out the washing or have a shower is ok.cause she is safe and cant get into stuff while I cannot be watching her.

Ha ha! DD1 did EXACTLY the same thing. The more I think about it, the more I'm not sure getting our three together is such a good idea!
It wasn't so funny when she pushed it around while DD2 was in it

And THAT is why when I get advice from well-meaning people (who have obviously never met the gremlins) that I should put baby in a playpen to keep her safe from the gremlins I just nod my head and say "Oh I didn't think of that!"

ETA: I also thought about putting baby in a portacot for her "floor time" to keep her safe but they'd either climb in or throw things in on top of her.

Yup same here. Nowhere is safe from the demon toddler!

Megansmum, sorry for the TJ! I agree with you too, she should be able to explore, it's her home too and things will probably have to change a bit to make it safe for her, but that's what happens with kids!

We don't even have a playpen and I've never considered getting one.

Daniel gets into the entertainment cabinet and presses buttons on the dvd/vcr etc but we are SLOWLY teaching him that they aren't toys lol.

I've tried putting tape over top of the openings so he can't put his fingers in there but he now knows how to rip it off.

But I figure the best way for him to learn is to explore his world

Yeah far enough for the small times that you need her to be safe while you are out of the room, but not all the time.

haha Emma I can see those 2 doing that too.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

LOL, my mother tried putting my brother in one while she sewed. He dragged it around the house. She tied it to a big heavy chair. He dragged the playpen and chair around the house. She gave up and set up her sewing machine up in the playpen and let him roam the house.

We don't have a play pen either. I usually take Jack into the bathroom with me when I shower or take him out to the clothes line when I do the washing.

The way I see it he needs to practice exploring and learning what he is and isn't allowed to do because not everywhere we go will be babyproofed or have a playpen.

We have a playpen and like you said its just used when I can't be in the room with him. So to have a quick shower or put some washing out, or if it's raining and i've got the dogs inside I will put him in it while I pop to the loo or go in the kitchen where I can't be there quick enough if there is a situation. (not that I think my dogs would but better safe than sorry).
The rest of the time he has free reign of the lounge and diner, the kitchen is gated off and so is the hallway but this is just cos our house is so open plan there was no other way of stopping him going all over the house. We have just child proofed the few things in the lounge we didn't want him getting into like the tv cabinet cos the doors are glass and was worried about him slamming them and some draws that pull out easy that he uses to pull himself up on.

When I go round the rest of the house he comes with me and loves exploring everything but I have to be extra vigilant as the whole house isn't baby proofed.

I don't think it would be fair for her to be in there the whole time and she probably won't tolerate it either, sometimes Spencer throws a wobbler about going in his so I get him out cos I don't want him to associate it negatively, also you can't really teach them how to behave with posessions if they only ones they ever touch are ones that are ok to be flung around and bitten etc.

How about an excersaucer? (sp?) They're contained from moving about, you can take it with you to the bathroom, outside hanging out washing etc etc. Maybe a combo of the playpen and excersaucer?

I got one 'just in case' when Sophie was really tiny but have only used it a couple of times. I am planning to put the Christmas tree in it this year!
