Over 30s: how long did it take....

How long did it take you to get pregnant?

I turn 30 in a few months and DH and I are going to TTC #2. Like with everything else in my life I'm ultra organised and am already preparing myself to a point where I may be over-analysing, actually freaking out would be a better word.

It took us 3 months to conceive Michaela 3 years ago but that's not to say this one will be as easy, infact according to the stats it will be harder. I also read that if you don't conceive within 12 months to see a doctor but if you're over 30 go sooner (how much sooner? maybe I should go and see one now or do you think a couple of month prior to TTC is too early ).

I read somewhere in the OhBaby! planning pregnacy info that over 30 you should see the doc, I think you are also ment to get a pre pregnacy check done before ttc anyway regardless of age, they will give you folic acid to take while concieving and do some blood tests.

The amount of time it takes to concieve depends more on the individual I think. A friend of mine took 5 years to concieve #1 when she was under 30 then at 35 it only took 6mths for #2 then #3 took 1 month of accidently forgetting to get her depo on time when she was 41! So I think it would be hard to work out an exact time.

I would suggest charting right from the beginning so if it doesn't happen in 6mths the doc will have some idea of how your cycles are.

I don't think being 30 makes any difference really - it all depends on the individual. With Elle, I started TTC at 25 and it took 2 years and treatment for "unexplained" infertility. With the last 2 I got pregnant straight away (and only lost them 'cause one was a blighted ovum and one was a partial molar, both of which are just bad luck, not because there was something wrong with me).

My friend started TTC her first child at 38 and she got pregnant 1st month trying! She ended up having twins .

As hard as it is, the important thing is to relax :) If you feel like it, go get the once over from your doc for peace of mind. Otherwise, just try and if not pregnant within 6 months see your doctor.

I'm 32, been ttc a year.

With Zac I was 34 and got pregnant as soon as I went off the pill. With Samara I was 36 and it took 3 months of trying.

i conceived all of my kids in my thirties....started in 2000 and now have three kids.

Okay...I thought I'd reply since your age/scenario is very similar to my own!

I conceived my DS during our first month of ttcing. I was 28 at the time when I concieved, and was 29 when DS was born. Perhaps I was more fertile when I was younger...or perhaps we were just incredibly lucky to concieve so quickly!?!?!?

Now, we are trying for #2 and I'm 30 (going on 31 in a couple of weeks) and its definately not so easy this time round!

I sort of knew that statiscally speaking it would be harder, now that I'm 'over 30'...but we have been trying for 8/9 months now, and still no luck....

I've been charting for 6/7 months of that time, and have discovered that my Luteral phase is substantially shorter than it was prior to the birth of DS, so suspect that might be causing a bit of difficulty in us concieving? ANyway, I've made an appointment with the FPA doctor for next week to run some tests and find out whats going on...

WHY OH WHY is it taking so long this time round?!?!?!

So anyway, I'm glad I didnt put off ttcing any longer! And I'm glad I started charting early on, so I am armed with the facts, for when I go to my doctors appt! Reckon I can justify going to the doctor before 12 months is up based on the fact that I KNOW our timing was perfect every month based on ovulation dates, rather than an average non-educated ttcer iykwim?

Will be interesting to see if the doctor agrees with me, next week!
