Hi
Does anyone know if you can get the flu injection while you're pregnant - or more importantly in your first trimester?

Work has decided to offer them free .. and I'd quite like to know if I can get one without alerting work to the fact I'm pg yet.

According to google info sheets (eg from health services) you can get it when PG. I'm choosing not to (am in third trimester) but many choose to because we have lower immune systems. Workplaces usually contract in nurses to do it - I'd suggest you discuss it confidentially with them.

Oooops just found this in a site...

"Are there any people who should not be vaccinated?
Influenza vaccine is not recommended for infants under the age of six months because of increased reactions.

There is no evidence that influenza vaccine prepared from inactivated virus could cause damage to the foetus, but as with other vaccines, pregnant women should discuss the risks and benefits with your family doctor.

Individuals with anaphylactic allergy to hens' eggs, or who have experienced anaphylaxis following a previous dose of influenza vaccine, should not be given the vaccine. Less serious reactions to egg or to the vaccine should not prevent vaccination."

I looked up the flu vaccine site (yes there is such a thing!) and it didn't even mention pregnant women - was quite surprised about that.

Ok rocking in with my two cents - my opinion only which you can take or leave.

I've had the flu twice. The real flu - not a heavy cold. I was sick for a week both times. High fever which made me delirious. Last time when I got in the shower on day 3 (when I could finally stand) I was in pain from the water hitting me - I felt like I was being pummeled. I can see why people can die from it.

I was told - incorrectly - by a friend that I couldn't have the shot when I was pregnant and spent the entire spring (which was the beginning of my third trimester) worried I was going to get sick because I knew that if I did get the flu again it was very possible that it would affect the baby in some way given the high high fevers. Add to that the fact that there's very little you can take when you're pregnant if you do get sick.

Yes you should check with your GP first but from my point of view if they say go for it I would definitely get it.

I will definitely be getting it when I'm next pregnant without hesitation.

I asked my doctor as my work was giving them out free. The nurse rang the vaccine suppliers to make sure and they said not to in the 1st trimester but ok after that.

I have had the flu jab for the past 3 years, and it works for me, i have never got the flu once injected, ih have had a minro cold, but it usually goes away within a day. I am 39 weeks 6 days so am not going to risk anything by having the jab now, but will defiantley be getting it once bubs is born, I get it for free as i have asthma. but if your mw or GP says its ok to have one, i would highly recommend it. remember that if your sick while pregnant it can be far worse as you have very low immunity while pregnant.
