Topic: Contraception after baby Posted: 24 October 2003 at 12:42pm |
Hi there,
I am due with our second child in just over 10 weeks. This will be our last child. We are planning for my husband to have the big V when this baby is 1 or so. I am unable to go on the combined pill, due to a family history of complications on it. I have heard about an IUS device called the Mirena. I have looked at their website, and it looks pretty good.
Just wondering if anyone has experience with using this, or has heard good/bad things about them?

Sorry can't help with the IUS. I am on the depo provera injection which I find great. It's only once every three months so you don't have to worry about it very often. It also makes your period very light which is always a bonus. The downsides are that it increases your appetite (I only notice it when I first get it) so if you don't watch what you eat you can put on weight and one that doesn't really affect you, infertility can last for up to a year after your last jab.

i was onn the depo jab for four years after a miscarriage. I had my last jab when I was 18, and didn't get a period after that until I was 20. Then I was too frightened to use contraception, coz the depo really made me feel like I had lost control of my body (i had no periods at all). I didn't use anything at all for 18 months, and when I was 21 I went on the mini pill. After 18 mths with no contraception and no pregnancy, I thought I couldn't get pregnant, either from the depo or miscarriage complications, but I ended up getting pregnant while I was on the minipill (lol but very unplanned!).
I've read heaps about the mirena, it's supposed to be good, and my doctor said it's safer than the copper IUD, but I ended up not doing anything coz thekids Dad and I separated, so no action there . It costs about $310 I think.

I had that too, it's called breakthrough bleeding, and it's just little bits, but it stopped after the 2nd jab. Had it again just before my period started.
My experience with depo was really really bad, maybe because I was so young at the time. My sister wanted to go on it too but I told her no, because I really did think I wouldn't be able to concieve after depo, because of how long it took to get my period back. I also put on a lot of weight on it.
Talk to your doctor when you go for your next jab if you have any questions, but I will say one thing for sure - it is ultra reliable, you won't get pregnant while you're on it. I got pregnant while I was taking femodene (minipill).

Hi all,
The website for the Mirena is www.mirena.com. I have managed to find a few people who are on it, and they say it's wonderful. The only drawback is the cost - it isn't subsidised, so it costs $310, plus around $80 for fitting. It does however last for 5 years - so it works out at roughly $80 a year if you look at it that way. I am 99% convinced this is the way I will go after the birth of my baby in Jan.

good on ya ali... - i was on depo - for only 2 jabs before decideing to have another child - and it took over 3 years like maya... - i gained weight and the depression of not being able to conceived was so overwelming...
also after each jab i could not sit down for about 2 -3 days because it hurt sooo much......
So anythign to reduce pain and have peice of mind and still be in control of your body is a good thing...

Some contraceptives just sound sceary to me. I was on the pill for a short while and then I changed to using natural family planning method - where you take your temp and stuff - and condoms when I was fertile. Found this worked really well for me with no side effects, and a bonnus of getting pregnant quickly when we decided to starrt trying

Yup as long as you use condoms EVERY time and from the very start. Just make sure they are not expired.

I would go on the pill again, but I don't think I would trust myself to use condoms all the time - Imight get carried away and forget . this time, I know all about how antibiotics affects the pill, so no more baby-shaped surprises

Thanks for all your replies ladies. I'll elaborate on my story a bit more: My mother has a blood clotting problem, which rules out the combined pill for me. It also rules out the injection. We are unable to use condoms, as both dh and I get eczema from them. I was on the mini pill after I had Sean, but was NOT very good at remembering it every day. Dh will get a vasectomy one day, but we're not ready for him to do that in the very near future. So apart from remaining celibate for the next 5 years (which is definately NOT an option) the IUS seems to be the only thing that will work. I am seeing my midwife next Monday, so I think I'll ask for her advice.

The standard IUD is supposed to be alright too, and it's fully subsidised (I think)

Hi, I would also like some advice on contraception as nothing is working for me. I have had two pregnancy's on the pill. I did try the injection and i had no period for 2 months then i had a period every 2 to 3 weeks after that. I had the injection twice so i had to wait for another 3 months for it to wear off. I then tried the IUD and well now im 2 weeks away form having my third boy, only 15 months after my second. We are planning for hubby to get the chop in a years time as it is reccomended to wait a year after your child is born. But as my 2nd boy was only 6mths when i got pregnant this time, I am realy worried about getting pregnant again. (hubby seams to think staying celibate for a year maybe a little difficult ) If any one has any idea's, please tell me.

Getting your tubes tied is another idea... but I think thats pretty extreme, plus Im not sure what it does to your hormones - would you still get a period??

No reason for women to ge their tubes tied! We go through the hard work of childbirth so why spend 3-4weeks not being able to do anything when your man can just get the chop and be good as new in a couple of days
