Topic: Mummy feels like a big meany! Posted: 16 February 2008 at 4:17pm |
Poor lil Phoenix has constipation by the looks of it. His stools were quite firm and pebble like, poor lil guy. I noticed a very small amount of blood on his bottom, it's on the outside of his bottom.
I think it's because we got a different formula the other day as the one we usually get wasn't at the supermarket. We had to get one that is a thicker formula. Phoenix was struggling to get through his feeds due to the thicker formula, so mummy and daddy thought if we added an extra 20ml of water to his bottle, it would be easier to drink. And it was.
Now I know why it is super important to follow the exact formula rules. Mummy is a bully.
I have canned the thick stuff, and found his regular formula and he is back on that. Will make sure he isn't in too much discomfort, others we are off to the doctors.
Poor PJ!

I would have thought it was ok to use more water just not less.

I doubt adding water to the feed would have caused that, my gp recommended adding extra water to Spencers feeds to help with his constipation. It was probably just the thicker formula that did it and it may have been worse if you hadn't of watered it down.
If he doesn't clear up you can buy some lactulose from the pharmacy, it is a non soluble sugar and helps hold water in the gut, 5ml a day for a couple of days should do the trick.

Was it Karicare by any chance? I found with my older 2 that they got constipated with that stuff.
Glad that he's coming right. I was told never to adjust the water, by my doctor and plunket nurse...

poor bubba - but it wouldn't have been the extra water that created the constipation.

Poor bub. BTW I add extra water to Gina's formula and have for a few months now and find her stools much better - she too was constipated before but not quite as bad. As long as it's cooled boiled water it should be OK.

It is Karicare. What formula does everyone use these days? I guess I thought it was the extra water as if the formula to water ratio is out, it can cause constipation. So I imagine it's the formula that doesn't agree with him and maybe I need to find something a bit softer on his tummy.

Tara, that is because some people think if they have less water and more formula it will fill bubba up better, and that really does cause constipation! Not the other way round though. I hope his bum is better now!

He seemed to do a normal big mushy poo today, so hopefully it's the end of his woes. He seems much happier.
Who does S-26. Never heard of it.

We use S26 as well, we found karicare made him windy as, nurture made him constipated to all hell.
Wyeth make S26. It's in the supermarket buy the other formulas.

Yeah, we top Bubby up with S-26 Gold at our 11 o'clock feed (she sleeps longer )
But don't buy it from Woolworths! They sting you like $22 for it... Go to Pak 'n Save... It's only $16-17 dollars there - Can't argue with that! And we haven't had any issues with it either, but in saying that, we haven't tried anything else... We got it on recommendation from my midwife, it's meant to be the most like breastmilk so yeah
