    Posted: 10 June 2011 at 11:02am
I have a 4 1/2 month old baby and have recently started him on solids, I offer him his "lunch" about 1/2 hour after his milk feed but when I do the same at tea time he refuses the solids and seems to think he needs another milk feed instead. My question is how long do other people wait between milk and solids at this age. I have a two year old as well but I can't remember what I did with him!

How come you are starting solids so early? I would wait until 6 months plus before giving him food. It sounds like he doesnt want/need it so I would just wait. Remember food until one is just fun, milk is the most important food source.

He almost certainly doesn't need solids at this age, so give him the milk feeds if he wants them! The nutrition he gets from breast milk/formula at this point is much more important than any he'll be getting from solids, so try not to stress.

If he's refusing solids then it sounds like he isn't ready, I would just carry on with the milk for now.
My son started a little bit of solids at that age(he was a big boy though and hungry hungry, he was 9lb 8oz at birth) but he gobbled it up willingly and at that stage it was just at lunch time and a few spoonfuls of babyrice with pear, and once he was 6 months old I offered him another meal.

Yeah definately only one meal that early. My DS is 7 months and is still on only 2 and can sometimes take it or leave it.

Yea, if he was having any solids at that age, I imagine it would be a very small amount and only really for the fun of it, as it were. He'll be getting everything he needs from your milk, so I wouldn't stress if he doesn't want them.

I agree with what everyone else has said...sounds like he's not really ready for solids, or at least not that interested in them. Milk feeds are much more nutritious and he's got plenty of time for solid food!

Thanks everyone for your input, I started my other son on solids early as he was a big hungry baby and he was very interested in solids, Dylan gobbles up the fruit I offer at lunch time so I think like Sheza said, I'll continue to offer him fruit or vege puree at lunch time but wait until he is 6 months before offering him more meals. He did take the solids once or twice at tea time but more often then not refuses, I would try and feed him while I was eating my own tea, guess I'll just have to go back to bfeeding him at tea time and having my tea once hubby is home (or eating one handed with bubs on my knee as hes very clingy in the evenings.

Maybe try BLW - that way you know he will only be eating what he is ready for

we started E on solids last week at 4months old (corrected) on advice from her specialist, she is only 6kg. doing 1 sml meal (only 1 teaspoon), but i feed her it just before i BF as it is only so tiny and is really about getting her used to it, now am feeding her in between her nite feeds just to give her somethign extra in the evening as my milk doesnt seem as plentiful then now. i plan to slowly up it to a tablespoon after trying her on a few diff foods, then changing to 2 meals around 5 months and seeing how she goes. i agree BM has to for sure be the focus, but some solids is good fo rthem too, esp to get some vitasmins, and once E is starting on solids she can come off her vitadol supplements which has got to be a bonus. i know some ppl say 6 months, but hey, when we were babies we were getting solids at 12 weeks (i was checked my plunket book as a bubba) and we turned out fine, i think you just know when your baby is ready and how much they need, mothers instinct, don't sweat it just go with the flow! if she's swallowing it down well then she's ready as far as i'm concerned, and at this sage i really dont thinka couple of tablespoons matters, and if anythign benefits their digestion to get used to solids more slowly than a fast introduction when they are older and really need it!

Have you tried offering a little bit more solids an hour before BFing in the evening rather than 30mins after?

im a bit of a hippy in one way with late solids also lol
not into home birth more the c/s birth for the record thou

but into b/f only for as long as required and only gave dd1 solids at 10months, dd2 at 9m

i did a 4hourly routine ie b.f 7am, solids 7.45/8 back to bed 9-11, bf 11am, solids 11.45/12 bed 1-3 b/f 3pm solids 3.45/4pm back to bed 5-7pm b.f bed at 7.30pm for the night. followed babywise/babywise principles

I never introduced fruit until most of the veges were covered as feared they would never eat vege. and only did one meal mid-day for a week or so then added in the next meal for the next fortnight finally approx 6-8weeks after starting solids did 3 meals.

but everybaby is different you will know your own baby, dont rush it if you are b.f thats all the doctors/plunkets recommend until they have teeth to be able to chew, at least thats what they said too me.

We feed our DS one 120g tin of fruit in the morning for breakfast, then another tin of mixed vege at about 5pm before bed, he is now 5.5 months, but started him on solids at just under 3 months and was taking half a tin twice a day. We always offer milk before and after solids just to keep him satisfied. We find morning and evening work best, having a long break between feeds of solids letting it flow thru him. From a loving at home Daddy.
