I gave birth last sunday and tore. Apparently 2nd degree (not sure rseally whay tht means) and it is apparently right to the anus.

I am in a heap of pain on and off, but righ tnow it is at its worse. I am expressing and DF is feeding as I ca't sit up to BF. Am having lots of baths and on voltaren plus topping this up with panadol.

2 questions...

1. How long did it take for you to heal?

2. What other suggestions do you have to ease or control pain.

thanks...

I tore like you, and had 3 layers of stitches apparently (I didn't look lol) but was back riding my horse after 4 weeks so it didn't take long. You should be feeling better, not worse. Maybe get your mw to check your stitches??   I was quite uncomfortable after about 9 days and she said I should be feeling better. Turned out she just needed to snip a couple of knots - instant relief!

I had 2-3 degree tear. For me, day 6 and 7 of healing were the worst, which is exactly the day you are now! I lay down as much as I could though at that time, didn't have the hang of BF lying down. It WILL get better. Sit on a pillow if you don't have a ring cushion - I actually found the pillow better than the ring cushion. Move real slowly and as little as you can.

I remember day 6 and 7 as days of constant tears and crying in agony, dreading having to feed cos that meant I had to sit up. Just take whatever drugs you can and hopefully you'll be feeling much better in a couple of days.

Ouch I feel your pain - with my 1st I had a 4th degree tear and I know how much pain you are in!!!!!

I agree with everything everyone has said - move slowly, sit on pillows, use the old naff massive pads (as they are heaps comfyer) and keep ontop of the pain relief. Keeping ontop of the pain relief is a must! As its heaps harder to get rid of the pain once the pain relief wears off. I also had codeine - if you weren't perscribed some try getting some panandeine which has it in it.

Also I found Arnica helped with the healing and take some lactulose to help with no 2's being softer - this helps heaps!

For me it took about 5-6 weeks to heal just be cautious of your movements and try to look after yourslef as much as possible! Big hugs - its not easy!!

I only had a little discomfort with my stiches, though they were disolvable ones that didn't stay in that long. I think it wouldn't hurt to get the midwife to check your stitches since in your in a bit of pain.

Do you add a bit of salt to the bathes your having? Salt will aid in the healing process.

These are tips my MW gave me.

Have a bath at least once a day (two if you can) Put some pure lavendar oil in it. Don't use anything else. I just used to lay there. It did help.

Get some oil capsules (the ones you take orally) Cut them and put the oil onto make up pads. Place these on the area. I used to pop thenm on top of the pad. you don't smell of garlic so don't worry about the smell.

It took around 2 weeks for me to feel as though things were getting better. It does take time but you will get there

Thanks everyone...yeah it is not nice.

Tried the round cushion a few days ago, but felt I was sinking in and spreading out too much down there, but that was I think wednesday so will try it again today.

Haven't used salt yet...will for my next bath. I have had 6 baths in the last 24hours. they are really good.

Hopefully it is day 6 and 7 that are the worse, as then it won't be long to go.

Took about 10 days for my 2nd deg tear to feel better in general. About 6 months before it didn't hurt to poop. If the tear feels like it's hot or itchy, talk to your mw asap as it could be infected.
Definatly ask your mw to help you feed lying down, that was they only way I fed for a while, and it's my fave position now. Great for bonding.
I wish I had taken Lactulose much earlier. I waited until 3 months before I gave it a go. It helped heaps.
Also the tea tree oil/water that someone already suggested. I just had it in a pump bottle to squirt on after wees.
