....has anyone done this? and did you have success with it? We have gone from not needing the dummy put back in to waking all the time for the dummy! Sometimes 7 - 8 times a night and at every nap time. My DH is away at the moment but we have decided we are going to get rid of the dummy once he is back as she is not sleeping well with it as it falls or she pulls it out all the time.

I am thinking its going to be pretty hard at first but better for her sleep (and mine) if we get rid of it now. Any advice, tips, success stories would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Edited to say I have recently introduced a lovie/blankie (a piece of my pj's) that she has taken too, so I am hoping this may help.

I am not much help at all but thought I would share.

We took the dummy off DS at around 4 months and did controlled crying. It took 3 days and nights of pure hell for all involved (and plenty of walking to the letterbox to stop me running in to him) but he did start sleeping through. This lasted until 6 months and then he started waking again and this continued until 12 months.

I was determined not to give him back the dummy but gave in at christmas time when we were camping and he now sleeps through every night so in hindsight I wish I had given it back to him at 6 months.

We weaned cold turkey at 8mos - so older than yours - and it took crying to sleep for the first two nights and then we were ok. She now doubles her tongue over and suckles that so I think she must have still needed the suckling. Unfortunately for her, she was eating her dummy so we had no choice.

The 3m mark is the hardest for dummies. We clipped our DD's one to her top on a chain (far enough away that it could get to her mouth but not around her neck) and she soon learned to put it back in when she woke - I think at about the 4 month mark.

We went cold turkey, just like Peanut. It was at the 5month mark though as we didn't have problems till then.

I was determined not to get up in the night for a damn dummy and didn't want him to rely on it later on so thought it was a good idea.

I stupidly did it while DH was away, it was terrible but only took 3 nights I think and he was fine. He wouldn't even know now what the heck one was!

Having said that though, my son is a comfort sucker for sure and over the last couple of months has just started sucking his bear's ear but I figure that's his comfort toy and he doesn't lose it/throw it out of the cot (too much) and wake up for it so I don't care!

Good luck! Oh anyway, we did controlled crying to a degree and then I just let him CIO. I wasn't going to get him up etc as I thought that would just be replacing one comfort thing with another, and neither options I liked. Honestly, the first night is the worst and then it quickly gets better. I caved the first day as we were out and I just wanted to shut him up so when we got home, I chopped the ends off them, and put them in the bottom of the rubbish bag so I couldn't be tempted.

Other options I've heard of is putting extra holes in so there's no suction, cutting off the ends slightly, or dipping them in a liquid they don't like (like juice or whatever but I'm guessing not for a 3mo baby!)
