DH is Kiwi and I'm german.

We went for a german first name and his sisters name as middle name.

Janina Jayne

Most kiwis can't pronounce Janina (Yaneena) but we just introduce her as Nina as that's easier to pronounce.

Both our names start with J and baby has now got two names with J but I'm quite happy with that, actually!

I'd defo go for a german first name, susyl!

Janina is nice but would have never guessed it's German. Must ask DH how he would pronounce it. Below is an email he sent to some friends asking for name suggestions and he added his own restrictions. I think he is a bit to worried my family won't be able to pronounce his daughters name right. Personally he's gone a bit over board!

... For that matter, anything with an R will be pronounced very differently in German. (Like the French "R" in Aurevoir) Also, the letter V wont work since they say V like W. As in, it's wery wery good. The opposite applies for the letter "W". It definitely vont vork! Lastly, you can rule out anything with "TH" like Nathan, since Germans can't pronounce that sound. I sink zis is obvious no?
Anyway, keep the suggestions coming! HAHAHA.
As for what names that leaves, us, well, it's f**k all! Just remembered another letter that's out. A name starting with J like Janet, wont work. J is pronounced as Y in German. The German word for John, is Johan. It's pronounced Yohan. So, in terms of the name, Janet, the shortened version, Jan is no good, since it's a guys name in German and spelt Jan, but pronounced like the word Yarn.

They can't even seem to pronounce my name! They seem to think it has a t at the end. So they call me Todt.

There are some really nice names amongst your suggestions. Appart from Helga & Dorothea (Sorry C&J)
Will get DH to have a look at them.
Other than that I'll keep suggesting the names I like over and over and one day he might all of sudden like it. You never know with men! Might even manage to make him believe he choose/suggested it. Silly creatures they are!
Here we go again, another baby on it's way!

Hah, love your DH's email!

My friends have a daughter named Sylvie. But probably too close to Susi. Agh. Too tricky!

Hmmm it is tricky with all those things to consider!

I like the idea of a longer first name given your last name is so short, and a name ending in an "a" sound would be good - eg Rebecca / Rebekah Lay.

Also, you might need to consider what the initial end up sounding like - you would need to avoid E.Z Lay too

So important to think about the whole name. I was going to suggest Anita, til I said Anita Lay out loud. I know of a family with the surname Sole, so they've had to avoid anything that starts with A or R.
