Topic: studylink + winz Posted: 05 June 2011 at 4:21pm |
I am so confused as to what I am entitled to studylink is horrible!
I am a student studying fulltime DH works fulltime and gets around 600-700 a week at the moment (hopefully more soon)
I get 150 from a student loan as my parents earn to much for me to get allowance (but yet I get no money from my parents sigh)
Our rent is 325, are we entitled to any benefits? accomodation supplements etc?
Has anyone else been in this position?

Not sure how old you are but when you get to 24 then you can be entitled to the Student Allowance regardless of your parents income if they are not supporting you

as soon as you have baby you are entitled to full allowance, so then its dependent on you and DP's combined income (not your parents income) less any deductions due to earnings
I used the allowance calculator on the studylink website link and put in your age as 23, your income as $0 per week, and you partner as age 26 earning $700 a week income, and said no he's not a student and said yes you will be living together and it said you are entitled to an allowance of $72.26 a week
but while you are studying WINZ wont touch you with a barge pole (which sucks)

oh and i left all the age etc the same and adjusted the income per week for your DP and it seems he can earn up to $846 a week and you will get allowance of $72.26 - and $ over that means you get $0 a week
have a fiddle with the ages and see what you get

Having a baby and being in a recognised relationship means what you get from your parents (or not) doesn't matter... My parents earn too much but as I am in a relationship and have a baby my parents income doesn't matter...
If you are with Studylink, Winz can't/won't help although somethings get referred between the 2.
I would just apply online and see what you are entitled to, if anything. My partner told me to do that and I was actually surprised.

Yep I forgot to mention that - once you are married/defacto then it is your partners income not your parents which is counted But for me, DH earned too much at $900/week.

oh dear so we cant get working for families or anything?
so just 72.26 which means we are actually worse off than on the allowance than on the student loan.

From what I remember (I worked for studylink about 2 years ago) you can still get working for families but I think its count as income for the allowance or it might be that the allowance counts as income for working for families
I do know for sure that if you are getting $72.26 from the allowance you can top it up with the loan to $150, however you still need to pay the top up back
Ring studylink and talk to them, hopefully you will get a good person on the end of the phone! Most extras that WINZ do (not benefits) studylink can actually offer you so just ask lots of questions and see how it goes

Buddyblueeyes if your DH works over 30 hours a week you should be entitled to WFF aswell, and like halted said you can also top up to $150 and at least that way you wont have to pay back the full $150.
With doing a quick calculation for you, your DH earning $700 a week (BT) and you getting the $72.26 from the allowance you should get another $71 from WFF, although I worked that out on you getting the allowance for a full 52 weeks and I could be wrong but I'm guessing you wouldn't get it over the break so will get possibly even a little more

Thanks so much! I will give them a call today,
I wonder if the top-up to 150 will be counted as income seeing as I have to pay it back?
You girls are great, I have rung before and just got no-where because I was not sure what I was entitled to.

Nope it is only worked out on the allowance part as being income I was studying when my daughter was younger and we got the full $150 a week and we didn't have to distinguish any of that

In fact Buddyblueeyes, if you decided not to opt for the student allowance but to opt for borrowing the full $150 you would be entitled to $148 a week WFF.
