Since going on formula a week or so ago, poor little Ava has been STRAINING before going for a poo (sorry TMI!). She'll grunt and go all red in the face, and when she does eventually poo its not hard or anything, so i assume she isnt constipated. Is this normal? She goes every 1-2 days.

yes I would say so - both of my girls had that when we moved onto FF and Sophie has had it again with solids.

If it gets too uncomfortable offer her some cooled boiled water a few times a day and if it is still not happening easily my plunket nurse recommended sugar water - 50ml cooled boiled water with 1/2 tsp of soft brown sugar. Ava will probably not be too impressed with it bit if you keep offereing little sips it may help if she gets too sore. Keep an eye on her and her bottom to make sure that there is no blood if she is straining too hard.

with some FF babies, even if they are 'regular' and not straining it is still quite obvious when the are going!! Both my girls are once a day kids.

Jack went a bit red, but it never caused any problems or anything when he switched on to formula.

If FF, babies should be receiving 50ml of water a day to help with constipation, thirst etc. With breastmilk, the foremilk acts as the thirst quenching 'water' part, whereas formula is just a constant. So yeah, I would try her on that (either in another bottle or through a sippy cup. And if she won't take it, I used to water down Jacks bottles by an extra 10ml at the first 5 feeds to make sure he got it (as he wouldn't drink water for ages). I don't think its recommended, but not harmful.
