Topic: Stage 2 food Posted: 15 August 2009 at 10:05pm |
How do you know when your baby is ready to move onto stage 2 foods?
Campbell has been on Stage 1 purees for just over a month now, and since he's just turned 6 months, I think he's ready but I'm curious to know if there are any behavioural signs to look for, to know for sure.

Nah just give it to him and find out. If he gags and/or power vomits then mush it up a bit more.
If you aren't already you can start giving finger foods and that will help with him learning how to chew and swallow lumps.
Don't worry about a little gagging they need to learn how to get over the gag reflux, and in my experience they don't choke they power vomit.
Kyle has started straight on finger foods cos he won't eat off a spoon or sit in his highchair and yeah sometimes he gags a bit but he's normally shoving more in the second he stops.

whitewave, I just gave them a go We've had a couple of gags, a power vomit (partly I think coz he gets over excited lol) and lots more mess! I also try to give C finger foods with every meal (or at least a couple of times a day) now and he has really improved with these over the past couple of weeks.
I've found, with the jarred stuff, there really isn't much difference in texture it's more just the ingredients (more than one, or more "interesting"). But I'm making C's food lumpier now too. He had (baby) pasta stars tonight and coped really well.

Cool that is really handy to know. I gave Eva zuchinni tonight and it wasn't a smooth puree and she didn't even notice.
Eva also had a piece of roti today, she loved it.

I just started giving Arianne stage 2 foods when she got to 6 months, she took then really well. I think it is just trial and error to see what they like.

I started Taylah recently as well. I found the texture was similar, just had different foods. Taylah loves the meat ones etc

Yup as already said, most of them are just as pureed, just a bit more interesting flavours.

Awesome, thanks for that!
Will try him out with some new flavours. He currently has a stick of toast for breakfast, which he mostly just sucks on and disintegrates, but is increasingly swallowing more of. I make sure I'm watching him, so that he doesn't try and swallow a bit that's too big. What are some other finger foods that are good to start off with?

I gave Ava a pit of roast potato yesterday and she happily sucked away on it. You could bake some kumara sticks etc.

Callum is LOVING cruskits at the moment, I put a wee bit of marmite on them. He used to just suck the marmite off but now he gums the cruskit as well and actually eats it.
Grated cheese and fruit like watermelon, banana, papaya and rockmelon are favourites here, I usually put a bit of fruit in his mesh feeder and give him some sticks to try as well and he plows through it all!
