I play indoor netball in Auckland and I just wandered at what stage of pregnancy have people stopped playing/doing sports like this?? I know indoor netball can be quite physical.

You're fine for a little while. I remember there was a furore over Adine Wilson playing in the 2007 netball world cup final before telling her team she was pregnant and all sorts of doctors came out of the woodwork to discuss when it was and wasn't safe, I wasn't that far along behind her so found it most useful!

Anyway the general consensus was that before about 14 weeks the baby is still down in your pelvis so protected from any knocks. When you get a midwife ask her though - I was measuring 2 weeks ahead with baby popping out higher than he was supposed to be, so she *strongly suggested* that I stop playing hockey at 12 weeks, a couple of weeks sooner than I'd intended to (which happened to be before we'd told people so that made it tricky!).

I was interested to find out that in the early stages of pregnancy you're actually likely to be at your fittest, because your heart has already started enlarging to pump around all that extra blood, so it's very efficient, but you're not yet carrying around the extra weight to slow you down It's times like that I thought pregnancy was cool. Course hyperemesis kicked in a week later!

The other thing to take into account is that during pregnancy all your ligaments loosen so you can be more vulnerable to sprain type injuries. So the danger is more to you rather than the baby. I was willing to risk it but plenty aren't

Congratulations, and hope that helps!

I stopped indoor netball as soon as i found out but mostly because DP and MIL didnt want to risk me getting hurt or overheating (no ventilation at all at our indoor court) basically mine was a matter of better safe than sorry.

ETA: Turns out there wasnt much chance of me being able to play that well with my chronic Morning sickness anyways.

just watch out you keep your fluids right up and dont get too hot and you should be fine till about 12 weeks. after that keep running round and doing stuff to keep fit just not anything where you can get knocked around. staying fit is great, i cruised through my pregnancy. had a great birth, came home the same day, went shopping the day after and was at the gym when he was 7 days old so keep doing as much as you can, just remember to rest when you get tired and watch those ligaments

I think I replied to yoiu in the other thread about this. With DS I played Prem Grade up til 12 weeks (season ended then). And this time I'm still playing at the moment, talked with widwife on Tues and she said as long as you feel comfortable.... just being careful of knocks and things. I will probably stop sometime around 14 weeks (at the rate I'm going I'll already have a big tum by then).

I've been wondering this myself. I've still been playing hockey - and midwife has said to keep playing until my body tells me otherwise, and my GP and a doctor in the family have also said it should all be fine.

Its hard because I'm pretty sure people in the team (who I have only just told am pregnant) will think I shouldn't be. I am stuck between worrying about what other people think and just doing what I think is right.

Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to be stupid about it, but think I have a couple of weeks of play left in me yet! I'm not struggling from a fitness point of view at all.....

Anyway just looking for thoughts and experiences others may have.
