I have been debating this a lot recently, as we cant do cows milk or goats milk nor those formulas that support them
From a money perspective, it is a little cheaper to buy soy milk rather than formula
We've chosen to stay on formula at the moment, just as we know DD likes it and takes it with no drama - although we use soy milk in baking, and for in her wheetbix in the morning. We'll probably switch to the milk when she's 18 months ish

I do know that Dr Rodney Ford doesn't agree with boys being raised on soy, but I don't know why he doesn't like it.

Not that i really know anything about it , but i thimk the reason they dont like boys on soy has something to do with hormones and something in the soy being like estrogen or something and causing problems.
I think, and I could be wrong

Yea - soy can be helpful to women as it lowers the levels of testosterone and increases the levels of female hormones. There's some evidence that it has the same effect on men - obviously not a good thing there. The significance of the difference in the change in levels it causes is a bit up for debate, but I think that's the reason some people suggest men avoid drinking too much.

Ah hahaha
Yeah i heard it has extra estrogen, and i know a lot of people that would never think about soy or put their children on it for that reason alone.
But for those who cant have anything else - well do you stay on the elemental based formula or go to soy and hope one day to get off it or... do you just not give your child milk

I wouldn't use Soy. It can affect the heart if you already have any issues and it can be very dangerous. My mum looked into it when she went dairy-free and what she found freaked her out since shes got a heart problem. When Jake was dairy-free we were luckily able to use goats milk but if not I would've used coconut milk, oat milk, rice milk, basically anything but soy lol...

Read this and this.
Soy is a poison. It is originally from the asian area. They would only feed it to their cows as an absoloute last resort as they knew it was poison. For themselves they only used to use it to make miso soup as when it is fermented it looses all the bad stuff. If you ever get radiation sickness then Miso soup will bind with the radiation and take it out of your body.
I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole.

Thanks Wriggles, I'd read the second one.
Babe, I read last night it's not good for people with thyroid history as well. Which is in our family!
Exactly Kim, he can't have the fortified rice milk, so what do you give them, We use Oat milk but it's not as good protein wise as rice milk so we only really use that in baking not as a drink.
We need to re challenge rice milk , but he's had the most foul pooh over the last couple of days so I'm canning the soy challenge. It's obviously stuffing with his digestion.

Well, it can't be that bad a poison. I'm a little doubtful it is. I had a little baby possum when I was a kid (my brother shot the Mum and took pity on it). I reared him exclusively on soy milk because marsupials can't process lactose well. Not only did he grow up to be a big healthy possum, he was also a male possum and was decidedly a healthy male possum. OK, so it's not a human (although neither are cows), and it's just a one-off not any kind of controlled experiment, but I kind of thought poisons, um, poisoned you. Like if I'd tried to bring the possum up on alcohol or something.
In saying that, with the questions round soy, I would at least think about using soy formula, specially as Jacobs a boy. I don't use formula, so no need to look into it further, but I would have if needed.

I thought it was just toxic in it's raw form rather than in it's processed form.
I have been told about the risks of boys having it due to the hormone imbalance but I have no problem in eating soy milk/sauce/tofu or any other soy product.

DD refuses all kinds of formula and is lactose intolerant. In the end she loved drinking Vitasoy Kids Soy Milk. It has all the extra added vitamins, calcium that kids need when not having formula or cows milk. Its been hard enough finding something that she will drink so we are sticking with it.
Isn't everything these days meant to give you some form of cancer or what not!?

i hear dsoy was real bad too, apparently the only way to eat soy is to have the bean itself, otherwise its not good. i cant remember why tho and dont have time to look at the article altho i will later as would be interested, cuz if we need to get E on a dairy-free formula i guess the only options are goats milk or soy and iw as thinking goats milk but need to know if i am comfy with soy if that seems the only option. that is if my BM does not last!!

My 15-year-old niece was weaned onto soy formula as a baby (due to dairy allergy) and she is the picture of health, no resulting health problems apparent there (yet anyway). No early puberty, or allergies. I would be more cautious with a boy though.
Soy really seems to agree with me but apparently some people can have major problems with it. I'm not sure if I believe in the Blood Type Diet but I'm an A which apparently does good on soy, but not on meat or dairy (which is true for me). If you're an O I don't think soy is recommended.
CJsays - we spent a fortune on goats' milk formula for my dairy-allergic DD1, only for it to cause major problems a few months down the track. There is hypoallergenic formula, like pepti-junior, available, or for example my DD2 is thriving on Neocate.

Anakk, that is exactly what I want to hear but from a boys POV!
I also have problems with soy, I get asthma from it so I'm not overly keen to grow him on that.
Babe, he's eating meats but not in great quantities, they also want he weight up & an easy source is via milk or milk substitute. He refuses kidney beans, unless I puree them & hide it in mince but that's not enough. He can't have chickepeas until we re challenge them.
It's also to do with what milk do I use in his baking. Oat works but doesn't have enough protein.
