Anyone got any tips on how to deal with this? I am 32 weeks pregnant and have for the past week or so been having really painful gums!!

It sounds ridiculous but I am finding it hard to eat (at my midwife visit yesterday I have actually lost weight), it bothers me all day and it for the last 2 nights it wakes me up at night with the constant throbbing. I have tried flossing, brushing with soft brush, and salty mouth washes - even listerine.

I have just been to see an emergency dentist who confirmed that yes my gums are swollen, but it is not due to calculus and is most likely hormonal. She didn't even charge me for the consult but sugested I ring the doctor about pain relief but numerous messages have not been returned. I'm also waiting to hear back from my midwife who's fantastic, but I'm desperate for help!!!

I am on Cartia due to a clotting problem but that's all.

If anyone has experienced this or has any advice please let me know!!!

My 2 little monsters are teething at the moment and at the same time my wisdom teeth have been giving me problems so I've been using their bonjela on my gums which actually dones wonders. Mayby give that a go.

Hope it gets better chic Sucks when your getting to the end and your entire body seems out to get you.

If it's bad what about a teething necklace/bracelet made from amber. Reason I say this is everyone here says they are great when their bubbas are teething at soothing sore gums and I just got one for my boy which arrived today but I see the seller makes bracelets for mum so it might be worth a shot?

Here's the auction I was looking at. But she has some other colours too

I sympathise- I had really bad gums a few weeks ago- reeeally swollen, throbbing etc. I boiled up some lavender flowers and leaves, then used the tea as a mouthwash.... mainly as I was worried about infection.   I dont know if it really helped- but it was gone in a few days- it was hormonal.

I guess like ms- there are some things we have to ride out. stink.

good luck- not long to go though. Eat porriage with lots of fruit, and coconut etc...nice soft food- get some goodies in ya that way??? or smoothies and vege juices??

I'd try teething creams like Bonjela like Lisa said. I don't know if there is anything else that can really be done about it. Mine are also swollen at the moment. I hate brushing my teeth as It's bright red with blood when I spit out the toothpaste. Just make sure you keep up with your hygiene or you could get something nasty.

I feel your pain, i had INSANELY sore gums when i was pregnant that i ended up at the dentist getting my gums scraped its called 'pregnancy gingavitis' apparently. Nothing can be done but natural remedies, or getting your gums and teeth scraped, i dont know what its called but thats what it felt like. Felt so good afterwards, um for an hour!!

I agree with Kylahsmum, as I also had this whilst pregnant last time - best to go see your dentist! Otherwise try the health food stores. I know with my daughter when she was teething she responded better to teething powder (from the healthfood store) than Bonjela, it may be worth a try as well. Stay away from clove oil (which normally is great for toothache/pain) as it can't be while you are pregnant.

Also try sensitive toothpastes, bonjela, salt water rinses. And keep up with the brushing/flossing even though it hurts it will help in the long run.

Hi guys, thanks for all the advice - it's nice to know that others are having (or have had) the same problem!

I'm already doing most of what's been suggested but I hadn't thought of Bonjela, last time I used it I think I was about 5!! Last night I had my first pain free sleep in 5 days with it beside my bed, put it on before I went to sleep and only woke up once for a top up at about 5am.
