Today it's because I know nothing about cars, so I have no idea if I'm being ripped off or not.

Dropped my car in for a warrant this morning, it's not even that old, a 2007 4WD, and they just rang to say it'll need over $1500 of work before they can give me a warrant I thought last year was bad enough when the bill was $500. This time they tell me I need two new rear tyres, two front brake pads, and something else I missed because I was a bit shocked.

Awesome timing considering I'm on maternity leave and we are down to one income.

Does this sound right to any of you who are a bit more mechanically minded? Maybe I just chose a bad model of car.

i dont know if its right or not. but you dont have to get them to do the work. sometimes the smaller garages do try and rip you off. You can take the car somewhere else. if it needs tyres go and ask your local tyre place like firestone etc (just for a second opinion) and see what they say.

I would take it to a testing station just to get a second opinion, they don't carry out the work themselves so I always feel they more likely to be objective- unless you're doing quite high kms it does sound a bit steep for a car that age.

What make is it? The dealer told us to steer clear of Subarus because they cost more over time but then again, I think it totally depends on who you ask.

I would be getting a second opinion too!

Tyres aren't that expensive, well 4wd might be - not sure, but DP needs 2 new rear tyres and it's costing $200 with wheel alignment too.

tyres for a 4wd will be at least $100 each.

Personally I would get a second opinion. My old boss took her car to one garage and they quoted her $1200 to get the WOF dont, her DH then took it somewhere else and it was $100 (including the WOF!)

I would definitely get a second opinion. That sounds far too high, mid-range 4wd tyres are about $200 each incl balancing & alignment. I can't think of anything non-engine that would cost $800+ in order to get a warrant, & engines have very little to do with wof. What make & model is it?

WAY WAY too much, tires will be v. expensive on a 4wd but shop around, firestone or beaurepairs should do them cheaper then a small garage.

Break pads arent a big deal either, i don't know much about them other then my (non mechanic) brother changes mine for me when i need them and they cost about $30 for the pads for my make/model.

Ask them to note on the warrent EXACTLY what needs fixing then ring every other garage in the area and see what they say. Oh and ask how much they will charge for parts (like the pads) ring Repco/supercheap and see how much theirs are and if cheaper offer to supply the parts so they just charge you for labour. Some might do that, some might not but worth a crack!

Ok according to DH, if you have a large 4wd such as F150 then good tyres CAN be 300-400 each, brakepads CAN be 100 each depending on caliper size (i have no idea what that means). But again that is for a BIG 4wd. He says definitely get a second opinion. And don't get your tyres done at a mechanics, take them to a tyre place.

go to beaurepairs and tell them your husband works for fulton hogan (provided they have a branch in your area) - it gets you a 10% discount off tyres

as for the brake pads - go to an actual brake shop like PitStop and get them to do a free brake check, they will check the pads and tell you if they do need replacing.

Thanks ladies, I thought it sounded a bit high but what do I know!    It's a Ford Territory, and I know the tyres are quite expensive as I got new front ones a few months ago.

Will definitely be going to an independent WOF testing station next time!!

I've got a 2006 Ford Territory and would be pretty stunned to have an expensive bill like that with such a late model vehicle

I would most definately shop around!

Hey I work in the service department of a caar dealership... If you get a second opinion from a vtnz or WOF only place they will see online what has been failed already... the company would have quoted you branded parts and the most expensive tyres for your vehicle, you can most definately get cheaper tyre at beaurepairs or firestone and make sure they know you only ever drive on the road (if thats correct) as the off road tyres are a hell of a lot more expensive! ask the dealership for aftermarket parts pricing and go get a quote from elsewhere for all of the work then go back and say 'look this is what i can get it done elsewhere' if its a large dealerhip they WILL beat it or atleast match it.if you have a good service history with that garage ask them for a 'good service client discount' should get atleast 10%. Or they should let you supply parts and just charge you the labour- Repco or Supercheap will have the right barke pads for you 4WD, but do keep in mind that if you supply the wrong ones you will be charged for them trying to fit them (this is just a scam...they know by looking at them that they are wrong!!! if they dont they are useless mechanics!!!) As for your next WOF go to a independant testing station, they cant rip you off. also look at your last wof papers- if they did the work and are having to replace some of the same items i would be questioning them as to why and making them do it at their cost as you would expect with new parts put on at the last wof should last more than 1 year. also your wofs will probably be done every 6months from now on :(

hope this helps!!

good luck

I notice your in Napier but the mechanic we go to is AMAZING he is in Hastings - Parkvale Motors at the little Shell station on the Hastings Havelock Road. I was on my own for a bit while DP was away working and he never ripped me off and will also try and put you off buying things through him if you can get it cheaper at say Repco (we needed a new battery once and he wouldn't see it to us but lent us a car to go to SuperCheap and buy one)

4x4 tyres are expensive though but I agree that it is worth going direct to Firestone/Bridgstone for a price as that is probably where they will get them from but add their margin on top

Holy cow!! My car is a little Mazda demio(2001) and it never needs stuff, just a tyre when needed, wiper blades etc! I think you are being ripped off!
Take it somewhere else, like VTNZ they are pretty good with just doing what actually needs doing.
