So far Ava has had rice cereal, pears and kumara. I don't want her to get constipated so I'm wondering what I should try next. Shes 5 months old.

Also, what first food combinations work well together?

pumpkin, potato, peach, brocolli, meat possibly, banana, apple

I tend to be traditional with combinations - veges together, fruit together, meat/vege combination ...

We came back from camping and the only things I had in the house were an apple and a kumara, so I made that combo and he loves it. Yesterday i made pumpkin, carrot, and pear. The other one I did was courgette, kumara, apple and potato. Loves them all. I only use the baby musli(never did the rice thing) to thicken it, he won't eat it if its runny, has to be thick enough to stay on the spoon.

I'd try pumpkin next, it's nice and sweet, goes nicely with kumara.
I cook most of the vege's for her - carrot, pumpkin, potato, kumara are in the freezer at the moment. But for variety I buy the odd jar and mix it with my stuff, a jar will do 2 o 3 meals so it's jar with potato, jar with pumpkin, jar with carrot.
I've found the trick to not getting bubs too constipated is to give SMALL meals.
The only fruits she eats are pear, banana, and apricot. Loves a bit of avocado too, and if you're out and about its easy to throw a banana or avacado in the bag to mash.

When Jack was smaller and I was worried about him becoming constipated I would add a small bit (maybe a teaspoon) of prune juice to his food. I would just boil up some prunes in water and use that juice, it was handy to freeze it (partially filling icecubes) as it lasted longer. Alternatively you could chop it up finely and add or give her a prune to chew on (in a feeder).

Kiwifruit is good too although I am not sure at what age Plunket recommends it

Joel had avacado and apple today, and a bit lumpy as well.

If bubbie does become constipated you could always boil up a prune and puree that and add to her meals.
Don't forget good old parsnip and carrot as a combo ;o)

We had a little trouble with constipation and ended up cutting out all baby rice/cereal and that fixed it totally. For lunch I do an apple/pear puree with either peas/corgette/sweet potato/squash and for dinners I have boiled chicken thighs and pureed them with a few tinned prunes and he'll have 2 cubes of that and 2 vege ones or pork casserole with brocolli and the vege cubes again. I also give him fruit in the fresh fruit feeder or a baby rice cake with a tidgy bit of vegemite at lunch and sometimes a pudding from a jar. He goes at least once a day now, on baby rice/cereal I was lucky if it was every other day, worse was 3 days no poop.

I have also have frozen cubes of organic pear juice and take a cube of that and defrost/dilute those a couple of times a week and add to his meals if I need to.
