Topic: Should he be crawling Posted: 01 April 2009 at 11:35am |
My boy is 7months old, and shows no signs of being interested in crawling, when he is on his tummy he pushes himself backwards then gets frustrated.
What age did other babies crawl??!!
My fiances mum says its because we pick him up too much, and his cousin (2 weeks older) has been crawling for ages!
Anyone have any advice please??!! :)

Hi and welcome!
Don't stress! It must be hard having a cousin so close in age that your boy will be being constantly compared to, but DON'T LISTEN to your future MIL. Pushing himself backwards on his tummy is one of the first signs, he will do it in his own time - which might not be for a few months yet.
I'm sure it would be useful, if you haven't already, to join in on your 'born in' monthly thread - that way you'll be able to see the range of activity with babies of a similar age. Some bubbas just prefer to sit back and take the world in for a while before they're in a hurry to get anywhere - trust me, you should cherish that, cos there's no stopping them once they're off! I often wish my boy was like that! He was crawling at around 6 months, but as far as I can tell that's on the early side, in our July group there are a few babies not crawling yet, and they're 8-9 months old. So don't panic! And when your future MIL makes a comment about it, just smile and say you're happy for him to be staying where you leave him for a little while longer, and you feel sorry for his cousin's mum having to chase around after her baby already!

Hi Kazza I agree with Weegee don't listen! Alex doesn't crawl yet and he is a week off being 8 months. He moves around on the floor and gets frustrated too but hey he is a happy healthy little man and so I don't care what others think I know that we are pretty quick to pick him up but he is doing what I think is pretty normal for a first born. I have a sister who is like your MIL she is always comparing Alex to her own 3 year old but forgets to realise that Alex lives in a house of 3 not a house of 15 and being constantly stimulated by older children (sorry for that rant she totally frustrates me).

Yes, I have one of those July 08 non-moving 8 month old lumps!
Don't stress - he will do it in his own time, and in the meantime cherish not having to be on the constant lookout for a baby into everything.
Don't forget also - crawling is not a developmental milestone as sitting and walking are, and some babies never crawl and go straight to walking (not that your boy necessarily will! )

As above - dont stress! My son is 10 months old and he's only just started crawling. He did it all of a sudden without showing any signs of wanting to. All babies develop differently - I personally didnt crawl at all when I was a baby, I just sat and stood!

Stupid people telling you you pick him up too much Apparently Spencer didn't walk because I carried him too much
Anyway, 7 months would actually be quite early. Spencer started commando crawling at about 8 months but didn't properly crawl until 13 months. He was quite late, most of the babies at coffee group were crawling by 9 months. All babies are different though, there are huge time ranges for them to do things and they all do things in different orders, try to just ignore stupid comments or comparisons.

One of my nephews didn't start crawling until just over 12 months old. My girls started at 8 months and I felt that was really early. I wouldn't panic all kids are different.

Oh who cares what others say LOL. Two of my girls crawled at 10mos and one of them still couldn't be bothered two weeks after that.

Mine didn't crawl to 10 months and walked at 13 months. This was pretty typical for all the babies in my coffee grp. Definitely nothing to stress about!!

Definetly don't stress, if there is a book telling when a baby HAS to crawl /walk/ talk/ by, I don't think any baby has read it , they all seem to have their own agenda.
Being of course that they are all individuals and not carbon copies,...don't let MIL stress you out

YAY i like this thread! Ava is 7 months old on saturday and she isn't moving AT ALL on her tummy - forwards, backwards, sideways - NOTHING!!!! She prefers to sit or lie on her back and blabber away!
I know how you feel. A baby in my coffee group is crawling already and he is 2 weeks older than Ava - but his mum pushes him to do things like there is no tomorrow and treats him like an adult, which i personally wouldn't do. Plus Ava has just started rolling in the last 3 weeks or so and she will only roll one way and a couple of the other babies in the coffee group started rolling at 3 months!
Oh, and my brother didnt crawl at all and didnt walk till he was almost 15 months old and he is completely normal (well, as normal as brothers can be!!)

Mine were all different, even the gremlins who have the same DNA, which is absolute proof that they all do things differently! They've all had the same environment to grow up in , in fact the gremlins probably had more floor time than the others coz I couldn't hold them both at the same time and yet they were my "slowest" babies.
Maya didn't roll till 7 1/2 mths, went from being completely immobile to crawling overnight at 8 mths and walked at 10.
Sienna and Mercedes crept backwards for months, from around 4 mths, but even tho they both did this exactly the same, Mercedes crawled at 10 mths and Sienna skipped crawling completely in favour of bottom shuffling. They didn't walk till around 13-14 mths.
And lil miss, well she's the demonic crawling baby and started at 6 mths but that's really early and I'm sure only coz she's been in a hurry to keep up with her sisters since the minute she flew into the world.

C crawled at 6 .5 months , walked at 9, talked in 3 word sentences before her 1st birthday .
And you know what ? i long for the days when she would just lie there...all this anxiety for them to walk and talk , and then they do and you just wish they'd sit down and shutup

My girl is 20 months old and has never crawled. She started bum shuffling about a month ago and is thinking about pulling her self up to standing, but nothing much. They are all different, so don't worry. I don't!

Agreed.
now Thomas can crawl i'm constantly up and down stopping him from going places I dont want him to be. It wouldnt be so bad if he knew when I said 'no dont go there' or 'come back here.' lol.
