Topic: Routine? Posted: 17 October 2009 at 1:27pm |
For the last 12 wks I've been doing what ever, when ever. Now I'm thinking as DS is getting toward 3mths a "routine" might be a good way to get a bit of a life back. Currently the only thing that happens at a remotely consistent time is his bath/bed time at night. (bath 6.30, bed 7 give or take 1/2 hour).
At the moment we both get up when he wakes which can be anywhere from 6 to 9am, then the day just goes though a random cycles of eat, sleep, play depending on how his temperament is going.
I tried the plunket recommended eat-play-sleep (repeat) but that didn't seem to work when he naps for only 45min the feed times ended up too close.
I just have no idea where to start. Any suggestions / timetables that have worked for others?
If he doesn't wake/sleep to my schedule do I just select a wake up time and either leave him in bed till then, or wake him if he's still sleeping? That sounds a bit mean, and I doubt he'll understand the difference between a planned short and long nap.

We have a pretty flexible routine, have never been a fan of doing everything by the clock but at the same time we needed structure so... this is what we do:
Regardless of what happened in the night, he is up at 7am, change, feed back to bed usually around 8-8.30am.
Up at 9-9.30am, feed at 10am.
Sleep from 11am to 1pm, feed at 2pm
Sleep from 3.30pm to 5pm.
Feed 6 pm, bath, massage, bottle around 7pm then in bed for the night by 7.30pm.
Bottle at 10pm.
The length of his naps varies, but he usually does one long nap a day and two shorter ones, and sometimes he has 2 or 4 naps instead of 3. The one thing I am strict on is that regardless of what happens during the day, his evening routine is always the same and always at the same time. Works for us most days!
Good luck.

I can't remember the exact timing of day feeds/sleeps from DS, but we started bookending the day first, so awake at 7 regardless of the night, down at 7, and dreamfeed at 10.30.
I'm pretty sure DS was routinely fed 3-hourly, then 4-hourly so I just worked around that. I won't feed a baby unless they need it, them waking is not a sign they are hungy, just that they haven't sleep through the change of sleep cycles.
We've been in a routine since DS was 3do (other than nights), and same with Ava. It's necessary for us, as I used to work nights and now work 2 days, so the carers and DH need to know what's going on.

Just somethng different, with my DD I just basicly go with the flow, so when she was three months if she was happy to play then she could, i'd offer her a bfeed when I felt she could be hungry etc
The only real routine we've had is nights, which was a feed, bath, feed and to bed. Which is now dinner, bath then bottle & bed and she always goes down really easy at night.
We have no day routine now and she is a really flexible and happy baby
And she is still having 3 sleeps a day!

I have never had a set routine for DS, I used to just go with how he was at the time, if he was hungry Id feed him, if he seemed tired, then down to bed it was.
In saying that though, he did seem to have his own pattern, like, he usually would always go down for a sleep at 10ish cos he got tired at that time everyday, but if the enxt day he wasnt tired until11 then thats when he would go to bed.
I dont really believe is strict routines, cos I dont like to put my kids to bed when they are not tired etc
These days Caden has a sleep at 11 or 12 and sleeps until round 2-2.30 sometimes later, and he is in bed by 7-8 at night.
Isabella, I just go with how she is, just like I did with Caden.

Morgan had no real routine until the last few days - we followed feed, play, sleep and she was up for roughly 1.5 hours but it had started stretching out to 2 hours - basically I was putting her down when tired and cos she had short naps most of the time she was feeding about 2hrly or so (anywhere from 1.5-5 hours tho). Now I'm basically having her up for 1.45/2 hours at a time, and shes having 3 naps only (was up to 5 cos she was going down later). So now its roughly:
Up 6.30/7 Feed
Nap 9ish
Up 9.45ish Feed 10.15ish
Nap 11.30
Up 1.30ish Feed
Nap 3.30
Up 5/5.30 Feed
Bath 7.15
Feed 7.30 in bed by 8pm
Usually a 5/5.30am-ish feed too.
By about 4 months Jake fed at the following times (and was up for about an hour or so in between, sleeping the rest of the time):
7am, 10/10.30am, 1.30ish, 3.30/4pm, one boob at 6 then bath, other boob then bed by 7pm, dreamfeed about 10.30/11pm.

And to answer your other question - the only nap I ever woke Jake from was the last one - he needed to be up by 5pm to be in bed by 7pm. He was more likely to wake earlier than feed time - in which case I held him out as long as poss, then fed him when he was getting really hungry. There was the odd arvo when he needed an extra feed though, cos all feeds as been a little early. I'd wake Morgan if she slept after 5.30pm I think - cos she goes to bed a little later and can be up longer. also she can go 5 hours between feeds if she has a huge nap, so I'd wake her at that point, cos it means another night feed usually!! (but these days she does more short naps anyway).
I personally think its too hard to have a very strict routine with young bubs - I just like to have times to aim for, but if it doesn't happen I go with the flow and try to keep the end of the day always the same. But if you do want to encourage a longer nap at a certain time, you can try resettling (rocking, shushing, dummy, feeding) for a few days to see if it becomes habit.

Yeah I don't believe in strict routines either, if I have a hungry baby then sure I'll feed him/her, but I also won't feed them just because they want it, because from my experience it leads to insufficient feeds and more feeds than they need.
I always had Jack up no later than 5pm from his last nap of the day to ensure bed was by 6.30/7. I think its important to have a set bed time regardless of whether you believe in routine or not - I remember my wee cousin being allowed to play until midnight if he wanted to, just because my aunty refused to put him to bed if he didn't want to. That's just nuts IMO.

Yeah Caden always has a set bedtime at night, I think it was 7.30ish, even if he didnt look tired, he still went to bed at that time, even now, bedtime is anywhere from 6.30-7.30, and he often chats to himself and plays in his cot for an hour or more until he fall's asleep, but at least he is in bed lol

I used the Babywise routine structure for Jake from the beginning and just kinda worked it together with his own natural cycle. I found it great coz I knew the approx time he got hungry and got tired so could plan my day round him.
He was sleeping through by 7 weeks and has always had very regular naps which I definitely thank a good routine for.
I think the key with any kind of routine is to watch your child really closely for a few days and work out their natural pattern then sort a routine round that. It made everything so smooth for us.

I agree with babe -- I based our routine very loosely on Gina Fords routines, but they didn't really work for Jake, so we sortof adjusted it to what he was doing. He also has always been a great sleeper and still has a very good nap at about the same time (up to 3 or 4 hours!). I think he settled so well when he was younger cos of the routine.
With Morgan I'm just basing it on what she is doing, and trying to keep it consistent. She is settling without any noise now on day 3!!!!!

We dont have a set routine as such. We follow the Feed play sleep structure and it works really well with us as I can recognise Jacksons tired signs much easier and means he gets sufficient amount of feeds. Jackson kinda just fell into his own time and we usually work on 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm etc (6pm - 9pm he cluster feeds and cat naps). On the odd occasion he'll do 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm etc if his day is more interupted.
This is our typical day.
6am - Feed and back to bed
9am - Feed, play, sleep
12pm - Same as above
3pm - Same as above
6pm - Feed play cat nap etc until 9pm
9pm - 3am - Sleep
3am - feed and back to bed
6am - etc etc
