We were completely shocked to get a 42 day notice to end the tenancy on Friday and are now facing the massive task of finding a new place.
We are in the desitable northern suburbs and really want to stay local - Bishopdale, Burnisde, Papanui etc. Unfortunately it seems that the majority of househunters in ChCh feel the same!
Here comes the WWYD. I saw a very average flat in the desirable area today. Right location, good size, right number of bedrooms. Kitchen old and dark but useable. But the bathroom was not good, no bath, a quite dank looking shower. Great outdoor area though. On the off chance that we do get offered it do I take it or do I hold out for something better to come up, taking the risk that something better doesn't come up? Or do we need to go out of area and leave all our friends and support networks behind?
It doesn't help that my husband is away this week so I am likely to have the decision on my own. there is a big part of me that just 'needs' to get somewhere sorted. I am finding the whole thing very stressful and with 2 young children and another on the way I could really do without all the uncertainty and upset. I am worried about making a rash decision and repenting for the next year (everyone seems to want a fixed term lease).
So WWYD? Thanks for reading, if you got this far well done!
If we don't find somewhere in time it is likely that I will have to take the kids up to Wellington and H will have to spend a room to rent somewhere to stay here for work.

In my honest opinion, take it. My brother had a house to rent in a not so desirable suburb (Aranui/Bexley), nice house but not a good area, and the first day he listed it on Trade Me he had something like 300 views. The first day he had people come through, and I think he had more than 10 lots of people through, he let it... to a young couple with a baby.
If you are planning on staying in Christchurch, it seems good rentals are slim pickings at the moment, so you might have to forego one or two of your criteria, especially if you are looking to rent in one of the less-affected areas.
Good luck! I know it's tough. We were really lucky to find a place to rent down there in May last year through a friend and I really wouldn't like to be in your position right now.
