I will check on the brand for you on ours when my girl wakes up from her nap, it's an ear one - but we also have a regular sort that goes under an adults tongue but can be used for *ahem* rectal temperature readings on babies The nurse at A&E on the weekend was explaining to me that the ear thermometers are not always the most accurate as it has something to do with their ear canal not being long enough.

I bought a cheap ($30) ear thermometer off TM and it is useless. You can use it 20 times in a row and it gives you really varied results each time. But my sister has a good one (maybe Braun?) that she paid around $100 for and says it is good. In the end I got a Tommee Tippee one from the supermarket for $15 and it works fine. You can use it either under the arm or rectally.

We've got a Braun one. It seems quite good. I originally bought one of those Tommee Tippee ones from the supermarket but could never get Matt to keep still for long enough to take his temp with it under his arm. It seemed to take forever to do the reading. I find the ear one heaps easier - only takes a few seconds & I can use it while he sleeps too.

I can only picture the reactions my cats have given when the vets do that to them.

We have a digital one from the pharmacy. It works really well.
I bought one of the cheap ear ones from TM too, after someone raved about how great they were to me and it is hopeless, just like yours Kelly!

ok, so TM ones are out! You get what you pay for I guess. I was looking on pharmacydirect.co.nz and they have
http://www.pharmacydirect.co.nz/default.aspx?T=4592&P=19306 - Tempteller CT-32DX for $73.95
http://www.pharmacydirect.co.nz/default.aspx?T=1014&G=1013&P=827 - Braun Thermoscan Clamshell IRT 4020 for $119.50
Do these sound good?

I bought an ear one from the pharmacy and took it back coz it was hopeless. Don't remember the brand sorry .
But I now have a digital one that goes under the arm and it's great, only takes 15 secs to read the temp which is good with wrigglers that want to get away from you.

We have the one that you can get with your flybuys points. Really good one but I can't remember the name of it. We also have a cheap one that you do under the arm and in the mouth. The ear one isn't that great for children under 6 months as Jax said their ear canal isn't long enough.

Ok, so the underarm ones work ok for babies? I thought the ear ones would be better? If not thats cool as the underarm ones are cheaper.

Ashleigh had her temp taken every 3 hours for 11 weeks while in hospital and they used the underarm ones.

We have one like http://4giftsdirect.com/productimages/1522_DigitalT.jpg - this . It goes under the arm (or rectally, God forbid!!) and is certainly accurate enough to check if baby/child is well or otherwise. If a high temperature is noted (38+) it beeps differently than for a regular temp. It was about $20-$30 from the local pharmacy and I've had it for about 2-3 years with no probs.
ETA: when it comes to taking an underarm temp I just hold the arm close to the baby/child until the reading is ready (ie it beeps). When my children reach about 2+ they actually quite like to wait and listen for the beeps. Babies don't care. For the in-betweens I usually hold them close in a cuddle or for a story. If they are running a bad temp they are usually not as able to struggle anyway

The problem I have is that the gremlins think that *everything* goes in their mouths. It's kinda tricky to take their temperature when they are trying to be contortionists and get the thermometer under their arm into their mouth at the same time

we have the one Busy mum has from when i was temping while ttc - havent used that on ella yet.
We use an ear one - similar to the braun one but we got it in oz - its one doctors etc use and was a similar price to the braun one - it is fine.
Ella had a rectal one done at kids first that weekend we were there - apparently hospital policy said on first admission that has to be done for the records. Daddy couldnt watch that one!!!! Poor bubba... They used an ear one after that.

thanks for all the advice guys. I went with a digital underarm, rectal, oral one from tommee tippee. It was priced right and if it proves useless on bubs, oh well, we'll worry then.
