So, Ethan has been going to kindy for Three terms now...
In the middle of last term (1st March to be exact), the Head Teacher made an appointment with me to "discuss" Ethan's speech. She put it to me that Ethan had not progressed with his speech the ENTIRE time that he had been going to kindy and that she was really concerned. I ask for her written observations (i.e. proof) that he was lagging behind others. Surprise, surprise she had none. I think that she was even more surprised that I was onto it and was asking to see the observations... (Handy having a SIL that is a qualified Early Childhood Teacher  ). Anyhoo, at the meeting the Head Teacher also discussed Ethan's "Only Child Syndrome" (WTF!!!!) That he was being too rowdy and needed to calm down. The only solution that was given was "perhaps he is enrolled into a Mainly Music Class as he has soooooo much energy.." WTF again!!!!! A Child having tooo much energy (Oh, this is the Head Teacher who bailed me up one day after kindy and TOLD me that I HAD to take Ethan off food clourings etc as he was too hypo...... and that she had made another Mum do the same a while ago and the difference was amazing... blah, blah..and then goes on to tell me that "party food" really doesn't agree with ethan... Well hello woman it was the Christmas Party for Kindy, all sorts of things available... what do you expect..!!!!.) Ethan doesn't have colourings etc anyhow....
So back on track.... I came home after this appointment really upset thinking that Ethan was going to need speech Therapy etc. So we followed her "suggestion" and called special services and got him on the list for a Speech Check Up... Well lo and behold the appointment was Wed gone.... The therapist COULD NOT understand why Ethan had been referred...!!!!! He is completely fine with his speech!!!! What a waste of time!!!!! When we went to kindy that afternoon, Ethan was talking about his visit to "The special doctors". When the Kindy teacher looked at me to clarify who the special doctor was, I took GREAT delight in saying rather flippantly of course: "Oh, we went to the Speach Therapist this morning as we were told to do by the Head Teacher. The Therapist could not understand why Ethan had been referred. She said that he was completely fine. Gee what a waste of time and stress that was..." and breezed on past them...... This morning I have received a letter from the speech therapy place formally confirming that Ethan does not need any follow up..and that he did not need to be referred in the first place... I'm sure I need to pop into kindy today to get them to photocopy a copy for their files... (And to rub it in again....!!!) They are such a collection of old ladies sometimes..... ok rant over.... ------------- formerly known as "Bee" Ethan ~ March 2003 Big 6 year old school boy! Time to switch kindys? I guess he loves going there so you don't want to have to move him..  I can't believe they said he has only child syndrome, WTF.. If someone said that to me I'd be so pissed.. I mean, what the heck do you say to that!?
Ella is a bouncy, full of life little girl, who eats healthy food too. So I know where you're coming from, and there is nothing wrong with a child like this! They have energy, they are kids afterall.. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

It realy hurt when the said only child syndrome... PND for 4 yrs, on meds, didn't want another one just then.... however when meeting occured, were actively trying...which made me feel really stink!!! They shouldn't be judging anyways....
Sometimes I feel that I can't win with them!!! He is such an awesome boy and always full of energy!!! Have thought of switching to get away from them, but will probably be the same at other kindy's... Jake is not an only child, but probably the rowdiest kid around! "only child syndrome" my bum! I am an only child and was aquiet wee thing( until later, but I digress).
in terms of your kindy, how structured is it? Maybe Ethan needs more or less structure than it is providing. BTW tell her to watch that Truth about Food programme cause apparently the belief that most parents have that food colouring and sugar hypes their kids up is rubbish ( i still think it does, but hey, I like to use facts to back up whatever thoughts i have for that day!) |
