OK so DH and I were talking last night, and neither of us knew... it sounds a bit silly really but here goes

Is it possible to get pregnant at a time not directly around your ovulation (but you are ovulating) or is it just physically impossible?

See, we figured if the window is about 3 days - those people who got preggie by accident were pretty unlucky! Or is it that whole week that can be the fertile time? Or is it possible at other times, just not as likely?

TIA

It is possible, but as you say, not as likely.

The fertile period can be anywhere up to 6days for some women (lucky...) anyway, so yes, it can be quite a few days for some, or not many for others. There are definite times when it just aint possible, but I would say with most normal fertile women, it isnt a huge window.

Hope this helps, Im sure some of the other ladies can answer this better than I can!

I've read that mens sperm can live for up to 5 days in there under the right conditions and that's why you are fertile for a few days before ovulation. A womans egg only lives for about 24 hours (maybe a little longer) so when you add it all up, that can be about 6-7 days.

From what I learnt through Natural Fertility (to prevent pregnancy!) was that you COULD get pregnant once you start producing fertile mucous as like Amber said sperm can live for 5 days. They also take into account that you may ovulate twice so they allow at least 48 hours after ovulation before you are safe. Basically when I was charting I was advised to abstain or use condoms for about 14 days!

I hate to narrow your window Amber by my OBGYN said per eggie 18 hours aimeejoy is quite correct as well though, you can ovulate twice and within a couple of days of each ovum being released, so in that sense, if you tack on EWCM and tapping your foot, you can get pregnant/be fertile over about a week
I read an article not so long ago that women are their MOST fertile at approximately the age of 27 (which was when I got pregnant). I actually wonder how that correlates to the age of mums that have multiples births!

Your DH sounds just like mine, but he did appreciate the advice I got with Josh when we had wind issues, so when you baby is here and you need help he won't be laughing then.

you can even ovulate twice!! I was very aware of my cycles (or so I thought) so when I met up with my DF, who had been in Europe for 3 months, on the day of ovulation and then fell pregnant I was quite chuffed with myself. then our dates got put out by 9 days! But how could this happen I asked....I was adamant I knew when I ovulated. My midwife smiled and says " so once you have ovulated to do you look for signs of ovulation again?" "Duh! No, I look for AF" so apparently I must have ovulated again and not noticed that one.

You can even have twins that are a week apart as apparently the "door" isnt shut till about 14 days after conception. You can even have twins to different fathers.....there's something to think about.

Fascinating isnt it.
