Ok, so I test in 4 days or so to see if Im pg, but about a week after that Im due to go in for day surgery at the hosp. Nothing major, just (excuse me if TMI) having a stoma port reopened and having a button thing put in. Its still a general anaestetic tho, and Im pretty sure this is going to be a huge issue if by some miracle I am pregnant yes? The forms they sent to fill out have the last question as: Is there a chance you may be pregnant yes/no (if answer is yes, please tell medical staff immediately. Or words to that effect. Help, Ive been waiting for this trifling surgery for ages, but ive been waiting to get pg for even longer, and I dont want to jeopardise that. Any ideas? I guess what Im asking is, Can you have a general anaestetic in your 1st trimester, or not? (and the surgery is abdominal too, which worries me, its about 2inches below and 4inches accross from my bellybutton. Abdo country.) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| I think you would need to tell them anyway. I'm not sure about the general anaestetic but with abdominal surgery they'd have to know that you might be pregnant. Can they do a test before the operation to make sure. |

I had a local anaestetic since I have been pregnant to get a large mole removed and that was perfectly safe. I think you would definately need to check with the doc and esp. since its around the same area as your girly inside bits and peices and because its a general, not just local. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I would tell the docs. After all, what goes into your blood stream, potentially goes into bubs. So do you want bubs to go under a general??? and bubs potentially only be 5 weeks??

| My mum had major surgery, some reconstruction or rather as a result of gang green which meant limbs and bits taken off so further surgeries needed. She had the bulk of it done before she got pregnant with me but she had to have a few things done while pregnant with me and they were working very close to..well..me but im not sure how things have changed as that was over 24 years ago... |

So you've already said there wasn't a chance but now there is, you need to bring that to their attention not just because of the surgery but also some of the "standard" drugs would be better substituted if you are pg. Perhaps call your Doctor a couple of days before the surgery, say there is a possibility (if there still is by then), and he'll probably just make sure you have bloods or POAS test done before the surgery. -------------  |

Hi
I had a general aneasthetic and abdominal surgery today and they did a pregnancy test beforehand. They wouldn't have done the surgery if I was pregnant - but the surgery was for fertility reasons.. so your case would be different... They're very thorough so I'm sure they would do a pregnancy test and revert to local aneasthetic if possible. Pesky |

| If you find out you're pregnant then let them know straight away and they'll make a decision.. better than getting ready for surgery and finding out on the day you can't have it.. although I considered this happening and thought the day off work would be nice! |

Well I get to test about a week to ten days before the surgery, so will know in plenty of time. Ive decided it isnt worth the risk if I do turn out to be pg, so will call and consult and probably cancel before the day of surgery. Not having the surgery isnt life threatening or anything of the sort, more of convenience. And I can rescedule at any time. They cant perform it with a local, it has to be a general, so will discuss with the GP tomorrow, along with everything else! My main concern was whether it would a) be continued as planned if I was pg, and b) what risk there was to baby. Will find out tomorrow I guess. Thanks! ------------- http://lilypie.com">
