Has anyone used either the KinderKot or Phil & Ted's T2 travel cot? We've got a normal portacot but it's so big & heavy for lugging onto a plane, so are looking into one of these options. Any recommendations would be great.

you wouldn't be able to take on the plane it would have to be checked in anyhow.
As for the portacots I only have a normal one from babyfactory. Are you travelling overseas? as you could check out hiring one once you over there. ------------- Ann

we jsut have a plain kingston portacot we got form baby factory, and its not very heavy.

Oops, I didn't mean actually taking it on the plane. Just that we went down to the South Island recently & had our luggage, Matt's luggage, the umbrella stroller & then this portacot which weighed about 15kgs. It was a bit of a mission to carry everything, even though we hired a car while we were down there. We're going over to Sydney soon but just for a long weekend & we're not going to have our own transport, so will have to get everything from the airport to the hotel which was why I was wondering about these 2 portacots as they only weigh about 2kgs, but just not sure how good they are. ------------- http://lilypie.com"> http://lilypie.com">

If you are staying in a hotel - I would contact them and ask if they can provide one. Lots of places (especially the more decent hotels!) are able to. That way you wouldnt have to worry about it!

but for the cost of buying a new one wouldn't it be easier to hire one? or if you are staying in a motel/hotel/apartment wouldn't they be able to provide you one? I suppose if you are planning to use it heaps it would work out cheaper to buy one, We are going to Uk very soon (can't wait) and I was thinking of hiring one and a car seat too just so there is less to lug around -with three kids, stroller and all the other things that go with it I couldn't be bothered lugging yet another thing. As it turns out my cousin has a portacot and carseat for me to use so sweet. ------------- Ann

I don't have one of those portacots but they are more like a tent aren't they? I'd imagine they would be good for a smaller baby, but with a 1 year old, they would probably try and get out? My daughter would have anyway. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

there was a thread a while back on here and it made me decide that the phil n teds one was a good option...it packs down sooo small - umbrella size. Last time i looked it was about $259 on special
but have to say i agree - a one year old would probably be too big for it? but would depend what they are used to....what about maybe getting a safe t sleep or similar to attach to a bed - or even prearanging a hire cot with the hotel you will be staying at? |

We've got a Phil & Ted's portacot. It's great - very very small and only 2.5kg. You could probably fit it into a largish suitcase even.
I think it would actually be ok for a 1 year old. The self inflating air mattress sits straight on the bottom of the cot, which sits right on the floor, so while baby would be able to stand up (obviously), I seriously doubt they'd be able to climb out. It also has mesh sides/ends and a mesh top you can zip up to keep bugs out. The only thing I would say is that I always feel the mattress isn't thick enough, so to take (or arrange) for an extra normal size blanket which you can fold up and pop on top of the mattress for extra padding. ------------- Selina http://lilypie.com">

I have a phil and teds, Its great, size wise it looks smaller than it is, my nephew could still fit in it at 2.5 yrs, its great, we camp and travel and bit and its great for that, but also use it at nannys as well. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

If you are staying in a hotel/ motel they most likely can provide a portacot for you.
I know in NZ all teh hotels myself, my mum adn my sister have worked in have portacots on request, also highchairs to. Might pay to ask. We used to ask age of children and automatically put a portacot in the room and the parents could decide if they wanted to use it or not. Im pretty sure at 1 it should still be fine, unless he's really into his climbing?? ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We're looking to buy one because we travel down to the South Island quite a bit to visit my hubby's family & none of them have portacots there, so we have to take one when we go. Both the Phil & Teds & the KinderKot say that they go up to 3 or 4 years of age, so I don't think the size will be an issue. It looks like the Phil & Ted one bub gets put in from the top like a standard portacot, but the KinderKot they go in from the side. Will try & see if I can find that old thread & have a look there. | My MIL has a Phil & Ted's T2 portacot, which she bought because my SIL wanted to use it to take my nephew to the US last Christmas. In the end, they didn't use the portacot after all, because he was standing up and could tip it and himself over. I suspect my MIL was a bit hacked off, as it cost a good $250! Anyway, we used it at their house to put Emma Rose down for naps and things, and I personally didn't like it at all. Em kept standing up and pulling herself up on the opening part, then falling back while still holding on to the opening and knocking the whole thing over. It is very lightweight but I didn't feel that it was sturdy enough to withstand my curious one-year-old, who likes to climb on furniture and pull herself up on everything. If your toddler is very adventurous, it may pay to check one out at a store where you can see it set up and test it out. |
