mikey has started wanting to feed himself more but not with a spoon (but that's a whole seperate issue), he really prefers it if i give him finger foods than if i feed him.
he usually has 2 weetbix with a banana cut up into it for breakfast but now that he's been feeding himself i've been giving him toast instead.
the thing is, when i give him toast he only eats about half a piece and then gets bored and wants to get down.
should i just let him do what he wants or should i try and make him eat a bit more?

I give Taine toast and weetbix - he shovels the toast in his mouth and between that I try and get weetbix in. Otherwise he will try and feed himself the weetbix - sans spoon - I have a cloth nearby.

My personal approach is to not fight the food battles. As long as she is eating something then I don't worry too much. It drives me a bit nuts with breakfeast as she gets super hungry by morning tea... but I just make that a bigger meal than brekkie... same with arvo tea. Weird child.

ok then, i guess he'll eat enough to not be hungry. i'll just try not to stress about it.

Ok so I have a similar problem.

Zaara wants to feed her self but even if I give her a spoon and I try and feed her, I noticed that she is not eating as much as she should. To give an example...if I was to feed her dinner she would only eat 3/4 of those wattied tin stuff.

She seems happy enough and she does have snacks every hour or so...so do you think there is some thing wrong? she was always such a good eater!!

And because she is walking now she looks taller and skinnier...my MIL is starting to make comments!!

It's normal - and good - for her to start getting slimmer about this age. More of it really is just growing up (height). I've really been noticing it a lot in my Hannah lately. Don't want her chubby for the rest of her childhood do ya?

Snacking every hour or so though, that seems quite often. If you want her to have a good dinner she'll need to "starve" for more than an hour beforehand IMHO. I give my girls 5 meals a day (3 main meals and 2 snack meals) and unless we've been doing something requiring extra energy, that's enough for them... if Hannah asks for something to eat up to an hour before dinner I tell her that her tummy has to get hungry for dinner lol (when she was younger I would give her some of our dinner as it was cooked/prepared - pasta, veges, etc and then it didn't bother me if she ate less at dinner).

I could be wrong about the hour thing...as she is at day care and I notice that kid have food when ever I visit!! LOL (I go there to BF her at lunch ..any time btw 12 - 1.30)

At home on the weekends she has breakfast then fruits and then lunch and then cracker or those vine cookies and then dinner...and some times she has more fruit!!

And ofcourse if she see's us eating some thing she wants it!! But never eats alot of any thing. We always give her healthy food, always lean meat, vege and potatos and stuff.

She was always a lean baby and never chubby...and now she is looking even leaner! As long as she is awake she is moving!!

I dont want her to be fat (like mummy)...and yet worry that she is not getting enough and I am being a bad mum for not forcing her to eat more!

I will say dont worry that much. McKayla will eat like a horse the one day and the next literally almost eat nothing. They know how much they need and will eat accordingly. Just make sure they keep their fluids up.

roksana, it sounds like zaara's doing exactly the same thing as mikey. i guess they know what they need and i'm trying not to worry. in saying that, tonight mikey had 2 dinners, both a good size! my parents were here for dinner and he had his tea first but then wanted to eat with us as well, i guess what shirena said is right, some days they'll eat heaps and other days not so much.
oh and i just want to say, good on you for keeping up the lunch BF! i still BF mikey, only morning and night now but i've had afew funny comments from people when they here that he isn't weaned yet. personally i think it's none of their business!

Damn straight! None of their business - you do as you please

And yep, about the eating less as toddlers. All they seem to want to do is snack... and then will completely suprise you by eating a whole plate! Tonight Hannah had ice cream for dinner (don't ask... ) and then I finally got off my butt and made macaroni cheese and she at the whooooole lot! (Yeah - super healthy in our house tonight! )

you should just tell her that you'll stop when it's right for you and zaara and she shouldn't go poking her nose in where it's not wanted!

lol nikki about the ice cream for dinner

Roksana I will ask her next time what time do you think that a Mom should stop BF. Depending on her answer say thanks I didnt know you were an expert. And then just leave it at that.

it makes me all hot and bothered just hearing what she's like, grrrr she shouldn't be so judgmental! just because she decided not to breastfeed doesn't mean it's the right choice for everyone.

Hi guys,
Joey is doing this eating thing too. SOme days he hardly eats anything and other days like a horse!! I was a wee bit worried at first but I came to the same conclusion as you 2 - he'll eat if he's hungry and he'll let me know!!
Kids are so funny!

I say YAY for b/fing!!!
