Ella's been off her last evening feed for the last 3 nights. She still needs it - she wakes in the wee small hours if she's missed it - she just refuses to take if from the breast. No probs with a bottle of EBM, but I only get a little expressed now, so can't see that working long term. Anyway, last night she again refused, so we got some sachets of formulas to try. Tried her on a Heinz gold one (not that I think the brand is to blame!), and after chopping it back like a trooper, she dozed off (which Ella doesn't do at the end of a feed), immediately came up in a red rash and hives, they went from her neck to all over, her neck swelled and she had trouble swallowing. She threw up (thank God) and seemed to breathe easier after that but before the ambulance had arrived she'd started getting wheezy breathing. She was given steroids at A&E and steadily came right overnight.
Our little girl is fine now - apart from some marks leftover on her skin from it all she's back to her normal self, and we came home this avo. What scared me the most was the breathing trouble, swollen neck, and hearing her wee voice all strained and croaky because she couldn't quite get it all out. I wouldn't want any parent to go through that, and I sooooo wish I'd taken that 'before using this for the first time, consult your healthcare provider' note on the pack seriously. OK, so we have no family history of food allergies, but crikey the poor girl's made up for that. And I know no-one expects anaphylactic shock, but it can happen. Ella now needs an epi-pen prescribed but is too little for the smallest dose, so we have to be hyper-vigilant until she's 10kg. She'll have RAST test done when she's a year old, and if that comes back OK for milk by then, they want to have her try some on her skin, but only in the hospital. We seriously didn't see this coming. So if you're considering trying a formula out, please try it some way other than a full feed's worth for the first time. Maybe just a little amount, or mix some up and put it on the inside of baby's elbow or something. But while I still think it's a fantastic invention, be careful that first time.

Hugs Andie - it totally sucks. you can now join the club, as we are getting an epi-pen this week My word of warning - when you start solids make sure she doesnt have any of the other major allergens (egg, nut etc) as she could be allergic to something else (found out today Han is also allergic to egg and ? nut). Also, do you need to cut dairy from your diet if still bfing? pm me if you need any help with anything - am getting pretty good at dairy free diets
Please dont feel guilty (I know I did) as there was no way of you knowing and in some ways at least you know now, as scary as it was. Hugs

How scary for you guys, especially as wee Ella looks so healthy and happy! I bet it was such a shock!
Sometimes bubbas go off bf when AF comes back (for the week), is that a possibility?

Hugs Andie - your post gave me goosebumps, coz a few years ago that was me with Maya I didn't even know what the hives were...
If there's anything I can do to help, let me know - it looks like the gremlins are going to have similar issues to their big sister so we can fight this one together with our Oct bubs...

Awww, thanks everyone. Yep Aimee and Emma - I'll be in touch. I had been looking forward to Ella trying out different foods in a couple of months time, but am pretty scared about her starting solids now! The hospital doc advised that she doesn't have any known allergens until she's a year old and after some tests have been done. Luckily I'd planned to make most of her baby-food anyway! But it'll be tricky when she's up and about and getting into things, because Ella likes nothing better than shoving things in her mouth for a good chew! The hospital dietician also commented that we need to keep an eye on her weight, because she's fine for her age, but not for her length. Plunket had always said that she was just a lean build, and I don't think she looks too skinny so I hadn't been worried. But now that I think of it, slender builds sure don't come from my side of the family, and while hubby's side are blessed with great metabolisms, they were all apparently very fat babies - to the extent that people (rude people) used to comment that they could do with fewer feeds!

Andie the other important thing - very important - is to get the word around in groups you are involved in etc, because all too often biscuits/crackers are passed around to anyone looking interested (so 5 or 6+ months) and a lot of mums mistakenly think if their baby is having it then the healthy-looking one just over there might like one too. It's a mistake I've nearly made quite a few times
Briona had silent reflux and didn't like to feed to sleep - ever. The sucking action was great but sleeping on a full tummy was not. Tummy-sleeping is apparently good if their tummy is unsettled (to do with not stretching the intenstines? as much or something), but that's only helpful if your bubba is old enough for that (Briona wasn't). We ended up doing the controlled crying thing for Bria, it seemed to be the only other option after getting her a dummy. For starters, I would sing/rock/pat her to semi-sleep and then put her in the cot and continue all that stuff until she was asleep. Many long days and nights and I was so glad when the reflux "cured"!

Teresa, I'm considering a giant sign to hang around Ella's neck when we're out... "please do not feed the baby" but then they never really worked for the monkeys in zoos so I can't see it helping here! Yeah, I'll make sure all my friends and family know.
And Vanessa - oh dear... Ella was 6.02kg at her last Plunket check a week ago. They didn't measure her though. Last time they did that was at 3 months, and she was 5.52kg and 62cm long. They weighed and measured her in hospital and I'm stuffed if I can remember the numbers (sooo got no proper sleep) but I could swear they said her length was 70-something... I remember thinking Crikey! But also, the nurse stretched Ella to measure her. And I could be wrong on the figure too. I think I'll pop into Plunket and have her measured and weighed before her next check, as it's 6 weeks before we see the dietician.

It might help to plot Ella's weight on the WHO graph in the Well Child book Andie. As long as she is following a steady curve and not dropping it doesn't actually matter what her weight/height ratio.
They usually diagnose "fails to thrive" if bubs crosses 2 (poss 3?) percentile lines.
Maya was fails to thrive due to allergies, that was the spin off of my dairy-contaminated breast milk . She crossed from the 97th at birth to the 3rd at 9 mths. She's still only on the 50th for weight, and on the 97th for height so is tall and lean, but she's healthy and I guess that's just the way she was made despite the fact that her Dad and I are both solid to say the least.
I remember feeling like the worst mother in the world that I had caused it, and "fails to thrive" is such a horrible diagnosis, like it implies you've done something wrong, when in fact thats not the case.
ETA: If Ella was 5.52kg at 3 mths and 6.02kg a week or so ago at around 4 mths then that should be fine - she's still gaining around 100g a week
Big hugs - you have noooooo idea how much I feel for you and poor wee Ella!

Last week at 17 weeks Isla weighed 6.1kg, not sure of length tho. Do u have to go dairy free even tho Ella never reacted to dairy before u gave her formula?

Thanks for your kind words and advice, ladies! Ella is following her growth curve nicely, so that's a relief. Since Ella hadn't reacted to the dairy in my milk before the formula incident, they told me I don't need to cut dairy from my diet. But I'm cutting it back to see if that clears her eczema and helps with the reflux (which was giving her a lot of trouble last night). Your news about the dairy free choc was SUCH good news, Aimee! I'm buying it today whether it's on special or not (ooh er... that's saying something!).
Yesterday mum told me that I reacted (not anaphylactic, but vomiting up blood) to all sorts of random foods when I went on solids, and had been diagnosed as failure to thrive (I agree, Emma - what a rotten term for it) at a month old. And all the hospital staff had kept asking if there was any family history... nope, I'd say.

God that must have been so scary for you, having done the mercy dash to the hospital a few times (although with asthma) I know how horrible it is when your child can't breath. Glad you are getting it sorted now and it sounds like there are lot's of ladies that can offer you good solid advise here. I have always just chucked my kids on formula without thinking, so I guess it's a valuable lesson for mum's with new babies.

Hi everyone,
Just found this thread through the search function...exactly the same thing happened to my nephew the other night. My sister gave him his first bottle of formula (coz she's going back to work soon and isn't having much luck expressing) and oddly enough it was the same one, the Heinz Gold one (a coincidence I'm sure). He came out in a rash all over and she rushed him to the hospital, he was unconcious by the time she got there. So apparently it's the protein that's in the cows milk and goats milk formula. Pretty scary! I'll direct her to ohbaby, sounds like lots of you guys have babies with allergies too.

Oh my gosh Sarah! How scarey that would have been. Glad your nephew was ok.
Welcome to Oh baby! How old is your nephew? My little princess, Isla, is 6 months old, and has some sort of dairy intolerence (? lactose or ? milk protein) plus possile other allergies. Do tell your sis about this site! Its great!

Glad to hear your wee nephew was OK Sarah! My now-four year old was allergic to cows/goats milk, soy, egg and peanut as a baby but as since outgrown them all - yippee! One of my gremlins, Mercedes, is allergic to banana and has had a few random reactions to who knows what, and both of them have cows milk protein intolerance.
There are unfortunately quite a few of us here in similar situations, I know there are three of us October mums (Kellz is one of them) with dairy free bubs, and Aimeejoy's wee Hannah is allergic to milk and a few other things.

LOL, it's OK - half the people round here call me Maya anyway even tho they know my name is Emma
Yep, it was a bit tricky finding Maya-friendly foods, but the dietician gave me some recipes so I baked a lot and we used the Manufactured Foods Database (www.mfd.co.nz) a lot. She ate heaps of fruit and rice crackers lol - still does! And at least with the gremlins coming thru I have the experience so know what to look for.
Best of luck for your wee nephew's appt next week.

Well Dennis had his allergy tests, and has an egg allergy even worse than the milk one! (not sure how you can have worse than an anaphylactic reaction...I guess must react quicker or something?) My sister will be getting formula on prescription (don't ask me what kind!)

Probably Neocate, revolting stuff that smells icky, but the gremlins love it
Sorry to hear about the egg allergy! Still, it's good to have a diagnosis so you guys can figure out what to eat/avoid.
Have you checked out http://www.mfd.co.nz - the manufactured foods database ? They have comprehensive lists of packaged foods that are milk/egg/peanut/wheat etc. free.

Aw Sarah, that's stink about his egg allergy too. I don't think it's that the reaction can be worse than an anaphylactic one, but that it can take less to set off a reaction, if that makes any sense. I heard of a boy in town who can't hold an egg, he's that allergic to them. It's awful for your sis and Dennis, but good that they didn't find out about this egg allergy the hard way too. Poor kid!
And thanks for the rice bread hint, Emma. I'll be shopping at Countdown next week - cheers!

Yes I thought that might be the case (re. the egg). Hopefully it's not so bad that he can't hold one! And hopefully he grows out of them...don't know what the chances of that are?
Also - my Dad emailed Heinz about the lack of warning about the possibility of this kind of reaction on the tin of formula, they rang him and were really good about it (and he's also spoken to the food safety people or whoever it is that decides what needs warnings on it). Anyway, as an apology of sorts Heinz sent my sister a basket with lots of stuff in it; books, bowls, mugs, spoons, a cookbook, teddy bear...can't remember what else. Pretty good I thought

Thats awesome. The Karicare dieticians are really helpful too, when we were trying to get Maya sorted they send me tins of goats and soy formulas to try, and gave me heaps of ideas on snacks she could have, and Tara who runs the 0800 Neocate service is great too.
