Hi ya and congratulations on your BFP!!
If you have some confusion about your dates etc then your midwife will often send you for a scan to determine your EDD. These can be as early as 6 weeks.
Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy

My midwife here in wEllingotn wanted me to go for a 12wks scan but I ahd one with my first so decided nto to have one. I was also sent for a dating scan at 8wks.
But you are allowed one if you want one. even if your age isnt an at risk age.
In Nelson it was the mothers choice to have one, my midwife there gave me a form to go for one cause I asked her for one it was the only one I paid for in Nelson whereas in Wellington I have to pay $30 each scan I go for.
Kazzy I know what oyu mean I have a 16 month old and it is much harder this time round than last time.

I was wondering if anyone has thought about getting a midwife yet. I saw the doctor yesterday afternoon, who told me I was seeing her early, she thought I might not have even known I was pregnant yet as I am only about 4.5 weeks. Anyway, she suggested not needing to find a midwife until a few months time, but I have heard that there is a shortage of midwifes in Auckland.

Well, I'm due mid September, and I had my first MW appt on Thursday last week. 7 weeks by my calcs, 6 weeks by hers. My GP had sent me for a 12 week scan on 12 Feb, but MW reccommended I delay till 1sr week in March to have a Nuchal Translucency scan as well, even though I am not in a high risk age group.
I guess every area and every MW are different.

Work is horrible no air conditioning only fans... so hot!
I'm staying with my doctor until I'm 12 weeks, I haven't even thought about a midwife yet seems too early to me I know with my daughter I didn't get a midwife until I was 16weeks.
It's so damn hot today and I'm struggling to keep my eyes open. Been having really horrible "night sickness" it comes on around 8 and hangs around until I go to bed... Those ginger kisses just aren't doing it for me this time around

I was told (and i found out 4 weeks) that I would need to ring straight away to get a midwife..i rang 5 before I found one..even at that early stage....yes it seems every midwife so different... i am more exhausted every day than when i went to bed and im a supervisor at a preschool adn finding it very tough:( I couldnt believe when my midwife said she turns down many women every day and many midwifes booked very fa rin advance..crazy:( seeing as they dont want to see you till 8/9 weeks!!!! I just get night sickness now too mel..horrible isnt it:( sea bands and the sniff box from egg working for me!!

Hi September mums
Scans vary widely depending on where you live. I live in Palmy and I was totally unsure about my dates as my LMP was 2 weeks long . MW and I just guessed and ended up correcting the EDD according to my "20wk scan" (which showed me as only 17wks). DFown here you only get a 12w scan if something is wrong (you Aucklanders are lucky!).
You really need to have a mw booked by 14wks because of the LMC contract. MWs can book up quickly, I prefer to be "safe than sorry" so I give mine a call at 6wks (when I find out) but don't see her until about 10wks.
The fatigue is horrible isn't it? It should lift around the 12-14wk mark when the placenta takes over the feeding of baby. Rest when you can and keep your fluids up over summer - growing a baby is a big job

I would definitely reccomend you get onto a MW asap. I rang mine at 4 weeks, and they said it was good to call as all their May spaces had gone and June was filling quickly (and at that stage going off LMP my date was June 14th) They didn't even blink an eye at how soon I wa calling.
With my dating scan I wanted it because my cycles were long and I knew that ovulation was around the 22nd day of my cycle - rather later than the 14th they base LMP EDD's on! So claiming a long cycle can get you a scan sooner, as the earlier the scan, the more accurate the dating.

Well, I got my blood test results back yesterday and everything was good, and HCG levels were within the expected range. I rang a midwife, and she had one space left for September. So I am meeting with her next week so we can meet her and ask any questions etc. She said that I hadnt rung too early, that lots of her collegues were already all booked up for September. I guess we will find out then when she sends people for scans. So has anyone told there family/friends yet?

Oh dear I really should get a wriggle on then! My doctor confused me by saying to me that I would be under her care till 12weeks then she'd pass me over to my midwife... I wonder if it's got to do with my age
We've told our parents and siblings; and our very very close friends. We haven't told the kids yet, they can wait a little longer. I think the 11yr old suspects something though....

Mel...why would it make a difference about age..you are still reasonably young..as long as she has booked a midwife you should be fine..its honestly stupid how far ahead you have to book..the same with our antenatal..we were told to book asap..weird!!!! (mind you im due late august so am nearly 10 weeks now..)

With scans I noticed it's different everywhere.
In Motueka my midwife saidf it was my choice for a 12wk scan as I was only 21 (turning 22 on the day of the scan hehe) but I had to pay for it. Then I had my routine 20wks scan and a 36wk one (to check position).
Up here in Lower Hutt my midwife sent me for a dating scan at 8wks, then wanted me to go for a 12wk scan but I said no to the 12wk as there was no need as I only had my first in 05 and it costs for every scan up here. Then I will go for my 20 wk one soon.
With midwifes, first time round I called one when I was 4 or 5 wks (when I found out) and had her all sorted and I was due Sept. This time round I had a midwife sorted by 7wks (as I found out little later), then changed and was lucky to get a new one at 17wks.
With Antenatal we ahd them booked as soon as I had booked my midwife as she said htey book quick.

Yeah that seems to be the case haleighsmum..different everywhere...i guess onceI've seen baby moving around I'll be a lot happier..will make it more real, but maybe different when I have second one.. it costs me for every scan.. I just assumed it cost everyone? (45 I think she said)

I have never had to pay for a scan... this is second time round and I rang my midwife as soon as I found out as someone told me that September could be a busy month! I felt a bit silly ringing so soon but I am glad I did as my midwife was getting pretty busy.
Well back to school soon (I teach 5 year olds) - I will be quite glad to be kept busy so the time passes a bit quicker!

I'm sure both pregnant ladies at work have paid for all their scans(45 and thats what lady said to me on phone) but will find out in a couple of weeks...could just be useless old chch :)!! Isn't it crazy how busy midwifes are...though they seem happier to take you back on if you have had a previous baby with them...

Hi there,
Congrats to all the September mums!!! It will be a very exciting time!
My hubby and I found out we were pregnant last Sat night after the 2nd month of trying. It will be our first baby so we are very excited!!! The due date is Sept 27th.
I am currently in Auckland but moving to Nelson a few months before bubs is due. I have already booked a midwife in Nelson, but not one in Auckland yet.
All the best to everyone!

Hi Fene, Congrats!!!
I used to be a pre-school teacher too, Kaw. Yep it is good having the breaks every 10 weeks in primary - it is just the mountains of paper work and meetings and weekend work that I dread!
I have to tell you this funny story - I went to (of all things) a pendulum workshop to learn how to use one for a bit of fun. Anyway, I was sitting around the table with all these psycic types and this lady turns to me and says "so your having twins!?" I just stared at her and mumbled I was only 6 weeks and she said she has picked up a girl and a boy - twins!!!! EEEEEEEK what a scary thought!! I tell you that my 12 week scan can not come quick enough now - it is going to be a long 6 weeks ha ha!

Yeah it's less pay and less holidays but at least I have weekends and evenings free most of the time!:)
|

Date Posted: 28 January 2007 at 8:18pm
Hmmmm, I dont know if having twins is something I ever thought would happen to me - I guess my first thought is having TWO babies waking in the night for feeds. Sleep deprivation with one was hard enough!!
But I guess it would be a double blessing... a case of wait and see how good this lady really is at predictions!

What is a pendulum workshop?
|

*lurking again*
Anyone who says it would be great to have twins has obviously never had them! I constantly have people telling me how lucky I am - I usually agree, but at 3am when I am bleary eyed and trying to feed the pair of them in the dark I don't feel so lucky!
Anyways, point of post apart from to moan about being tired is that ultrasound charges vary all over NZ. Some district health boards offer them free at the hospital, some only do that if you have a hospital midwife/OB but if you choose to go private (and most places are private) you pay a 'gap' fee - the ultrasound place receives the government maternity benefit fee and then charges you a small surcharge. I had all my scans with the twins (yes all 17!) at Auckland Radiology and they were $25 except the 20 week anatomy which I had at Ascot and paid $200 for in 4D.
Oh and up to 12 weeks your GP can refer you for a scan even if you have a midwife. After 12 weeks only your LMC can refer you.
Hope that helps.

Hehe I have got to stop lurking...(altho my gremlins did look like being Sept 06 babies at one stage )
Yep, with twins they like to do fortnightly growth scans from about 28 weeks as thats when their growth starts to drop off, but because mine shared a placenta there was also a risk of TTTS (where one baby shunts too much blood to the other thru the placenta) so I had fortnightly scans from 12 weeks. Plus an extra couple when I had contractions at 26 weeks and when it looked like Mercedes had stopped growing.

Wow! 17 scans - that would be kinda neat to see them every fortnight huh!
Whats a 4D scan? I've never heard of them before. How soon did you find out you were having twins?
Kaw - the pendulum course was about learning how to get answers to questions using a pendulum - for stuff like which foods are right for you or other yes/no questions - bit like the wedding ring on the string to see wether you having a boy or girl. Nothing freaky just a bit of fun!

Worried? he he depends how much I think about it! More curious to see if there was anything in this ladies prediction! I keep wondering if any of the symptoms I am experiencing are relevant to twins like a really heavy feeling in my lower abdomen, a tummy that seems to be popping out rapidly and the sickness and dizzy spells.... but then again I guess every pregnancy is different - I just didn't have any of these with my first. EEEEEEKKK - the thought of double of everything is scary and I would find it much harder to go back to work I think which would be a worry as we rely on our two incomes. Hurry up the next few weeks so I can find out for sure!!!:)
Wow that 4D scan sounds AMAZING! I will have to see if I can find an example of one on the net :)

Hi Sept Mums
Hubby and I have just recently found out we're expecting our first baby on Sept 23. I think I'm still getting used to the idea as it happened VERY quickly but of course we're both absolutely stoked and looking forward to the months ahead.
I've been feeling pretty good except for being dog tired which, after reading the earlier posts, seems to be a common problem during the early stages.
Looking forward to getting to know you all over the coming months.
So far we've only told my parents and a couple of friends. It still seems a little early to me for us to be telling too many people so we'll probably wait a few more weeks. I'm lucky I haven't had MS as it would be quite hard to disguise I think as I work in a small office. Does anyone know if I haven't had any nausea so far is it likely to pop up? I am 6 wks and 4 days.

Hi Sally! Big congrats to you! My friend didn't get anything until the 9th week and then she was sick, sick, sick until 18 weeks! Sorry - that is not very encouraging is it! But I guess everyone is different. I didn't have any with my first but I have had waves of nausea with this one. Only been sick once so far and today I feel pretty good at just gone 7 weeks...touch wood it stays that way!

Here are my two in 4D at 27 weeks as an example of 4D (and they really do look like this, their noses etc.)
And re: twin symptoms, I had nooooo idea I was having twins, not even a sneak suspicion. Bad MS but I had that with Maya too. And I 'felt' bigger but put that down to subseqent pregnancy etc.

I had my first midwife appointment last night. Was nice to meet her and find out about everything, it was only supposed to be a half an hour appointment, but it went for over an hour. She gave me a bounty pack and heaps of reading. I have to do more blood tests she took my blood pressure and I had to pee on a stick. Because I am reasonably certain of my dates I dont need a dating scan, but I have the option of having a 12 week scan if I want, she seemed to think because I am young that I dont really need to, but the choice is mine. I go back for my next appointment in 5 weeks. She did say when she felt my stomach, that she shouldnt be able to feel anything and that if she could feel something then it may be twins (and lucky she couldnt feel anything). So is everyone else having a 12 week scan?

Thanks for putting up your scans Emma. They truly are amazing and show so much detail on their little faces.
I've unfortunately had some bleeding since last night so have been to the doc this morning. He did an examination & couldn't find anything of note & I haven't had any pain or cramping etc. My pregnancy book did say this could be perfectly normal so we'll just have to wait & see. I'm going for an ultrasound this arvo to make sure everything is where it should be.

Desiree, at my first MW appt, she didn;t feel my tummy, I thought it a bit wierd..... and when I went to the DR he didn't make me do a preggie test, so I thought that was a bit weird too....
Guess it just goes to show that every DR & MW in every area is different.
Mr DR sent me for a 10 week scan, MW wanted a 14 week scan, radiographer changed it to 12.5 weeks!!!! Go Figure!

I'm having a 12 week because I'm so curious to see baby..and I want to make sure everything as ok as it can be..but lots of people wait till 18-20 weeks before first one.. hope it all goes well Sally...!! let us know , but I'm sure it will be fine!
travel girl...same happened to me...8 weeks at MF ..didn't touch tummy....doc didn't do test.. just had bloods done after midwife visit..it's totally normal at some places...every city and every place seems to be so different.. man it must be annoying for them to all be changing mind on when to scan though!! how far along are you now?

Well I had my scan yesterday afternoon but they unfortunately couldn't see all that much. They do think they saw the egg sac which they measured (& it appears I am only 5 wks rather than 7).
I don't appear to be having an ectopic pregnancy as they couldn't see anything outside the uterus (& I've had no pain). Great news. They did another PT which was +ve so, so far it all seems to be ok. The bleeding has eased off but there's still a little there... It seems to be a game of wait and see. A doctor will analyse the scans & send a report to my doc. Fingers crossed everything's perfectly normal & will continue to progress.
Welcome Ellen. I am probably an Oct Mum too I think...

That sounds very positive Sally. It would have been a tough few days for you. Make sure you rest heaps and I bet it will all be fine. Let us know how you go.
Back to first antenatel appointments...When I went to my GP to confirm pregnancy she didn't check my stomach or take a pregnancy test either which I thought was strange. She just asked if I used Clear Blue which I did. My doctor also said if I want to see her for my pregnancy I will have to pay and I thought this was covered by the government. I thought maybe I have to pay because the clinic is right in Auckland CBD but then I phoned another one today in the CBD and they said I won't have to pay, so I will go there.
Does anyone know when I should make my next antenatel appointment? I saw the doctor 2 weeks ago and had tests done and I am now 7 weeks. I am just going to see the doctor until I move to Nelson and then see my midwife.

My midwife wanted another appointment after my 12 week scan..at almost 13 weeks..so I don't know if they are all different.. i thought antenatal care free? I wasn't given the option of having my doctor he gave me a list of midwifes.. I had just had bloods but otherwise she would have done them first visit 8 weeks and then pee test every time after the first as well..but every MF soooooo different !!!!

Congrats to you Ellen and welcome to our chats! I guess you will be a busy Mum with a close age gap but I am sure it will be wonderful!
It is funny hearing about everyone's appointments as I havent had a thing yet! I had a pregnacy test with a nurse and then they gave me a pat on the back and a list of midwives and sent me on my way! I booked my midwife the next day and she said she would contact me soon. If it wasn't fo the extreme tirdness and nausea I would almost forget I'm pregnant. Well I am only just over 7 weeks so it is early days yet although the midwife was a bit cross and said the doctors should have at least taken bloods but oh well! Has anyone else been feeling yuck and tired? I can hardly get out of bed somedays - I can't wait for this bit to pass as I didn't have this with my first!

I was the same about the midwife..she wanted a appointment around 9 weeks but could fit me in then(8) and i only had bloods done early as i had to go to doc about something else (a different doc) and he was surprised the bloods hadn't been offered by first doc .. I felt like you not being able to get out of bed..though i had to so every day dragged me ass outta bed till about 10 weeks .. but heaps better now..a lot of people seem to be different with second.. i wonder why that is?

That is funny how every doctor and midwife seem to have different ways of doing things.
I am 7 weeks today and last week I struggled to get out of bed in the mornings and get through a whole day at work. I just feel like sleeping 24/7. Yesterday was the first time I felt a bit yucky.

Scan on friday so maybe changed to a september mum but i think I'll go further into august...will have to wait and see!!!!

Fene, antenatal visits to your doc should be free, it's covered by the maternity benefits scheme. That's also why if you doa preg test at the docs it's free if it's positive but you have to pay if it's negative.
Have you all booked midwives yet? Not wanting to lurk, but there is a nationwide shortage of independent midwives atm and they book up quickly so it's best to book in early even if your first appt is a few weeks away.

Im lurking to Emma hehe.
They book up quick everywhere, which makes it kinda hard especially for those who dont find out till later on intheir pregnancy.
The midwife up here I had first time round didnt check my tummy or babies heartbeat and I was 11wks when I saw her, but the midwife I have now who sw me at 17wks did all that and thought it was real strange I didnt have any checks like that done, the first one jsut quickly wrote down my details and it was over. So I guess they are all different with how they work.
So who all here is having hte 12wk scan?
I had mine for Haleigh on my birthday (end march) hehe she was due end sept, was great bday pressie to see bubs for first time.

Yep - I booked my midwife at 4 weeks too and I felt a little silly ringing up so early but mu midwife said good job I did as she was getting pretty full. I would have been upset if I could'nt have had her again so thank goodness I rang!
Can't wait to here about your 12 week scan Kaw!! 4 weeks to go until mine and counting. Felt okay yesterday but today hmmmm Nausea alllllll day! And the kids come back to school tomorrow so hopefully I feel a little brighter. Sure glad I only have a class of 7 at the moment! Hopefully newbies won't come tooooo quick

Thanks Maya. I wish I had of known at my first appointment with my dotor as I would of questioned it with her. It wasn't until I read a pregnancy book I found out about the maternity scheme. I am definitely not going back to that doctor again!
I have booked a midwife in Nelson and I think I will just find a GP to see in Auckland until we move which should be in 4 months or so. I am going to have a 12 week scan.
Yay how exciting Kaw having your scan on Friday!
Hope you start feeling better soon Kazzy!

I also rung my midwife at 4 weeks. I am going to have a 12 week scan done, just for piece of mind more than anything. I have to ring my midwife and get a form for the scan off her, does anyone live in Auckland and know a good place to get scans done?
