Hi there

My family is considering moving to Australia and I am just wondering how maternity care works and what it costs. Also my Dad has type 2 Diabetes and can access funded care in NZ. Anyone know how that works in Aus for a NZ citizen?

Thanks

I believe that it should all be covered under Medicare, once you meet requirements. You can get early approval (when you arrive in Australia) if you have the correct paperwork, otherwise there is a 6 month stand-down period. The information should be on the enrollment document that you can download here: http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/forms/3101" rel="nofollow - Medicare

Thanks, Stoked. I couldn't see anything on the doc you posted though. So are maternity options/ care the same as here in NZ? ie midwives etc.?

What I meant was that the pdf is blank ;-)

Oh, I wonder why the form is blank? There is a link to the medicare application form on the bottom of this page http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/subjects/medicare-services

I'm not sure how the maternity services work there, I imagine it could differ from state to state?

I'm sure there are some people living in Australia on this site though who will be able to help.

I have just moved here from australia and as far as i know the maternity services are very different, Im only ttc and do not have any kids yet but from what I gather from friends and family experience. Its not as personal over there, and most people just have babies in the hospital and are monitored by their gp and a hospital ob. We started infertility treatments over there and have found the treatments/process is much better over here.
