Hi everyone- I am a nz er and my husband and I have just moved to Australia with our 4 1/2 month old girl. Before I left Plunket told me that it wasn't urgent but maybe I should go get my daughters hips checked-
Does anyone have any experience with things like this? My only concern about her hips is that she can move her legs up and down but not really outwards? Like how babies use their legs as a prop when they learn to sit. Her legs don't go that way. Is that normal for her age? Help. What a confusing question (sorry)

If someone mentioned it I would definitely get it done - if there is a problem it's a [relatively] easy fix when they are little, but if they are older it can cause lots of problems. I would probably go to my GP (hopefully you've got one already) and get them to refer you to whoever it is who does hip checks - I guess you might have to have Medicare/Insurance sorted before you do (if you haven't already).

Hi Jessica,
We had hip problems with my DD but we in NZ-in the Waikato they scan all breech babies and it showed up in the scan at 2 months old. As Ariel said the earlier the better, while the hip is still cartilage. For my DD we had a fabric brace for a couple of months, 23 hours a day-was horrid but has fixed the problem. Really good to get checked before she starts walking, here's hoping there is no problem as plunket do refer lots of kids to get checked and only some actually have problems. My DD had a few risk factors-she was first born (less room), a girl (for some reason girls hips are more easily put out), breech (so squashed in a bad position) and there is a family history- I only just found out about this-she had a great aunt who had problems with both hips and it was not picked up until it was too late.
Good luck and fx for no probs Smile
