Hi everyone!
I've started this thread so there is a dedicated area for those using TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and/or Chinese Acupuncture to share their stories.
After 11 months of trying, I have started seeing a chinese medicine and acupuncturist. Her main concern with treating me is to rid me of "dampness" - my acne and excess mucous (sorry if TMI!) which can impair my body and its ability to function normally.
After that, she said she really needs to work at improving the warmth in my blood - I run very, very cold.
My blood tests from dr's indicate nothing is wrong with me. DH has "super swimmers". My periods are what is considered "normal" in western medicine (2-3 days max, light, stop/start nature with clotting, not very red, and a couple of days spotting at the end). In chinese medicine, they are not considered normal at all and are a sign that my blood flow and uterine lining is not good.
That's the short of my story, ill add more tidbits as we go along
I look forward to hearing what everyone else's experiences have been like!

Oh and here are some questions to answer:
1. How often do you have acupuncture? 2. How long have you been having chinese acupuncture? 3. What herbs, if any do you take and how often? 4. have you noticed and improvement with your cycle and/or hormones?
my answers; 1. i've had 2 sessions, go back for 3rd on CD6 (monday). 2. Only just started 3. im on some concoction of ground herbs that i mix in with a 1/3rd cup of water and drink like a tea twice a day. i have no idea what they are! 4. not so far, except i had no PMT headache before getting AF which was quite good!

Not TTC with acupuncture currently ( may do this year though) I love this subject..
I have had Acupuncture recently to help my early pg nausea (am no longer pg). I also have dampness. I was told to adjust diet.
Great thread

How did you go with the adjusting diet thing? I'm already gluten-free, but got told to avoid cold food and raw food - as well as add cinnamon and warming spices to as much food as possible. I also got told I needed to up my red meat intake a wee bit - think that was to do with 'building' my blood more than the dampness.
Also told to avoid alcohol, bananas, peanuts, dairy to help rid the dampness, and lemon in hot water every morning.

I didn't adjust my diet really I was told to avoid bananas, dairy (except yogurt), wheat, caffeine, peanuts, alcohol, etc I eat mostly gluten free anyway, not because I have an intolerance, but because its a preference of mine, I actually have a personal aversion to flour.. It sounds crazy.. And I hate explaining it to people cos I get the weirdest looks But I can't physically touch flour (well not easily) so its basically a phobia, I can't eat baking with it in it, I'm very picky with breads etc.. I tend to eat gluten free or very grainy breads with limited flour. And when I bake, I bake flourless with ground almonds or any alternative instead of flour........... I swear, I'm not a total freak But I'm not gluten free totally as I have things like pearl barley, soy sauce and the occasional treat But cutting out bananas, dairy, and peanuts would have been SO hard! I eat those things daily.. Well peanut butter I love! Bananas and banana smoothies for breakfast quite often. And at the time I was told this... I was horrendously sick with first trimester nausea and was literally LIVING on bananas, crackers and peanut butter on GF toast! I would love to try the diet, but I've never been good at cutting out whole food groups so I'm quite aware it may not last long if I was to try!

your wheat aversion is quite funny! had a giggle imagining someone explaining it to me hope you don't mind! actually my DH is the worst for not liking foods for no reason other than texture so i kind of understand it
i've been off caffeine since march, but i still get a small intake from raw cacao powder (i love this stuff, make hot chocs with it and bliss balls) and the black tea in chai, but i have fresh chai so i've decided its okay :) i really miss coffee some days though!
interesting my acupuncturist told me that those who suffer bad morning sickness usually have bad dampness before falling pregnant. she thinks that getting on top of it now before conceiving is a really good thing for not having it when I do fall pregnant.
talking about bananas and peanuts makes me think of peanut butter muffins...they are amazing. think mashed banana, peanut butter and blueberries baked in the oven...incredible!
i don't feel much different, but my skin is kind of okay at the moment, so maybe its all working?

Don't worry, I get lots of laughs from my flour phobia!! I'm used to it, and full know it's weird
Hmmm that really makes me want to get on top of my dampness before falling pregnant again, I was SO sick, I was like "I'm never getting pregnant again" (kinda like when you have a hangover..... "I'm never drinking again!!" ) But I seriously was the sickest I've ever been, I missed out on the gorgeous summer we had all over the country and missed a good friends wedding and so many other fun events, as well as 4 weeks of work! Only to lose the baby at week 19..... Life is mean right??!!
Anyway, back to full health now and TTC but dreading morning sickness!!! P.s they should call it 'all day all night sickness'
Because I was so severely sick I could have quite bad dampness? Mind you, my diets so much better these days, but still not perfect for a diagnosed "dampy" I have milk, bananas, peanut butter daily, and occasionally have wheat other dairy and caffiene/coffee God... Those muffins do sound amazing... Eating to cure dampness is not something that would be easy I am going to try wean myself away from dairy as much as possible and onto almond milk or something as a step in the right direction!
I'd love to know what herbs you take Pity your acupuncturist didn't write them down for you..

Hi ladies, So glad to have this thread up and running. We have been TTC#2 for over 18months now and I'm on my 2nd cycle of clomid (the first one was a bust as I produced too many follicles and thus we couldn't BD w/o protection).
Anyway, if this cycle doesn't work on clomid I want to start acupuncture as well (we'll try one more cycle of clomid after this and then we'll move on to IUI which I would defiantly like to combine with acupuncture)
Anyway my question is, does anyone have a recommendation for a good fertility acupuncturist in Auckland?
Lots of sticky baby dust to all,

Hi there, DH and I have been TTC # 1 since March 2011 and have just finished my first IVF cycle. I'm pretty keen to see what other things I can do to improve chances and am keen to try acupuncture. I google'd "acupuncture for infertility auckland" which came up with this site, which I thought had useful tips:

Hi ladies... great thread!
I've been going to acupuncture for 5 weeks now. Have been going once a week (missed 4th week as had other commitments) but other than that, plan to keep going every Wednesday.
Had never temped until seeing her - had always been pretty certain of when I ov (sometimes get twinges on one side) and cycles are always pretty much spot on (27 days). One interesting thing she told me is she didn't think it was a good thing to feel cramps when you're ovulating... anyone else been told that? Anyway, she wanted me to start temping as she said that she could gather quite a bit of info about hormone levels and other things when looking at charts.
Other than that, she has put me on a 6 week detox, it's called 'Heel Detox' (Heel is a company that makes homeopathic products). Pretty simple, just add drops to 1.5ltrs of water and drink it daily. Has given me a bit of a headache over the first few days but apparently that's normal when your body is getting rid of toxins. Not taking any other herbs.
n00b, haven't been seeing her long but her name is Angelique Kingsley-Smith. She is in Sandringham. I find her really lovely. If you want to find out more about her her website is www.acupuncturehealth.co.nz
Can't wait to see how we all get on and if acupuncture is going to help

Hey everyone!
red tulip, i hope you find temping helpful, it does give a lot of indication i think about hormone levels and how well they are progressing. the detox sounds interesting, are you expected to notice anything different with your cycle whilst on it?
noob, im not in auckland sorry so can't recommend anyone, but red tulips lady might be a good start?
nervousmama, lurk away! open to anyone who wants to contribute :)
my update - just had appt with acupuncturist, its CD6 for me. My period was already way better - it was still really light, but went for 4 days continuous, no clots, a lot thinner and more red (which is apparently very good). also, only 1 day of spotting too and it was also red, not brown. no PMT headache either for the first time ever. this is all a very good sign that the herbs/acupuncture have had a positive impact on the last half of my cycle.
My digestion issues look to be resolved, she said my abdomen is perfect and my pulse indicates I am ready for the blood building herbs, which is really exciting! i'm doing weekly appts this month i think just to keep on top of it.
also, she told me that stress is definitely not a factor with me - she said my pulse doesn't indicate this at all, there is no tension in me. I found that really reassuring, all those "just relax and it will happen" people are wrong! i knew I wasn't stressed. it was nice to hear that from someone in the know.

does accupunture hurt?? I have a small phobia

Hi everyone!
Great thread :) We have been TTC for almost a year now, and I have been seeing an acupuncturist for 10 weeks.
I see her twice in a cycle (my cycles are around 5-6 weeks long), once before I ovulate and once after. She puts needles in differet spots depending on where I'm at in my cycle.
She hasn't said anything about herbs but she did say she thinks I have a blood definiciency and I am running cold. She suggested I take iron and CoQ10 and also to eat warm foods, use a hot water bottle, keep my feet warm etc.
She also gave me a book by Zita West 'Fertility and Conception' which has a detox in it for liver cleansing. I did it, but honestly detoxing doesn't agree with me, I ate way more bad food afterwards than I usually would. I think I'm better to try to eat a healthy diet consistently. Other than that she hasn't really talked to me much about food. She did suggest coffee and alcohol aren't great, but she said if it's stressful to cut them out completely I should think about cutting down to say, one coffee per week and really enjoying it.
My two cycles since seeing her have been my shortest yet, so I'm pretty happy with that. We actually fertlized an egg this cycle too, but unfortunately it is a chemical pregnancy (the second time this year). So that sucks. I'm seeing her on Thursday this week so it'll be interesting to see what she thinks about this happening to me again and whether she will adjust anything she's doing with me.
Anyway, sorry for the novel! Love to hear other people's experiences!
OH, and I live in Mt Maunganui and see Jackie Burkett at Pure Acupuncture. She is really lovely and knowledgeable, I would definitely recommend her.

Most of the needles don't hurt, I actually can't even feel some of them. Before I ovulate she puts a needle over each ovary and when she twists them, the ovary I am going to ovulate from hurts a bit - but nothing major. There's a couple of other points that feel a bit painful when she turns them (a bit like a burning sensation). But I'm sure if you explained your phobia they would take it slow with you!
A friend of mine has a needle phobia and sees the same acupuncturist as me - she doesn't get the needle in the forehead because it freaks her out :)

hi nervous, it doesn't hurt, you hardly feel it. theyre usually really good at distracting you so you don't even know the needle has gone in! and like what julietta says, sometimes you get a warm, kind of burning sensation when they turn it.
awesome info julietta! i run cold and have dampness, but looks like we've got the dampness sorted after 3 weeks which is pretty good, i just have to keep up the dietary things as much as possible for that. all the things you have been suggested are really good, the other things are to try and include cinnamon and other warming spices in as much of your food as possible - chai tea is excellent. i put a bit of black pepper, chilli, or cayenne pepper in to as many dinner meals now as possible.
with the detox thing, sugar is a really hard thing to break - try replacing it with pure maple syrup if you can, or even honey. then just reducing your dairy intake (except for yoghurt) should help. pretty much like you said, if you eat healthier all the time, then that is better. Meat and green veges is pretty much a fail-safe dinner option!

Hi guys, So I had an appointment with my acupuncturist tonight. She is honestly worth every cent I pay - she is like a counsellor, acupuncturist and fertility expert all in one!!
She talk me through my miscarriage and explained reasons why I could be having recurrent early miscarriages, went into great detail explaining different causes, when I told her I had requested a referral to Fertility Associates she told me what I can expect, what questions I should ask and what tests to request - she even gave me a book and emailed me a heap of information. She is seriously amazing!!
I feel such relief after talking to her. She described this whole experience as "soul destroying" and that's exactly how it feels!
Anyway, just wanted to get this all off my chest! x

Hi julietta, so great to hear about your acupuncturist! I will be keeping this in mind when we move back to nz, may end up back in the bay so good to know about her!
What reasons did she suggest may be the cause for your recurrent m/cs? Have you made appt with FA yet or still waiting for referral?
My next acupuncture appt is Monday, can't wait! Hope my pulse is reading better, I really want it to work!

Hi Vineyard! She honestly seemed quite baffled about the miscarriage! She said she was sure the first one was a one-off! She gave me lots of information about different blood disorders that can cause it. Particularly 'sticky blood'. She doesn't think it's a progesterone issue for me, but obviously FA will test for all the hormonal stuff, but she definitely thinks I need to request extra tests around the blood issues.
She also mentioned that men can have dna fragmentation (??) in their sperm which can cause it, so she thinks we should ask for DH to be tested for that. She said these tests are over and above the normal testing FA will do, but it's well worth to get it all done then at least we will know what we can rule out.
She also said I need to be prepared to really push them to test for this stuff, as they will likely say we don't need to.
She did say she has a strong feeling that I could still get pregnant and carry naturally... FX!!!
I find the needle placement so interesting too! She always puts them in the same place pre-ovulation:
One in each ankle, one in each shin/calf, one in each ovary, two on my stomach (one with a heating cone thing), one in my forehead and one in my left wrist (which kinda hurts!).
I haven't had any knee ones!!
In my luteal phase she does the same leg/ankle ones, left wrist, forehead and one in each ear!

Oh and my Dr is away until Monday but I have left her a message asking for her to send through a referral so hopefully she does that early next week so we can get rolling!!
My pulse reading has become a LOT better since my first appointment. She seemed quite concerned about mine at first, but even last night she said it sounded really good despite the early miscarriage.

Hiya ladies, Just popping in to say hi. During my last acupuncture appt I had a couple of needles that hurt and I'd never had that before. One was to the side of my shin just below the knee and the other was in near my wrist. Really strange, when I moved my leg slightly it was quite sore where the needle was. That's not to put anyone off who's thinking of acupuncture - it certainly wasn't painful. Justw ondered if anyone else had had the same thing as usually I don't feel anything. Talking about funny needle places - during one visit I had one in the top of my head and one at the base of each nostril!?? lol! Julietta, things sound like they are going really well for you - thats great How's everyone else going?

Hey Red, the one in my wrist always hurts - it must be a more sensitive spot? Sometimes the one in my calf/shin hurts a bit if she twists it too much. I know what you mean, it's not unbearable pain, but just uncomfortable!

redtulip, sometimes my knee/shin one hurts more, just on my left side, but today it didn't at all. its kind of like you just notice the needle is in more than other times right?
I had an awesome appt. My pulse is so great, she has decided to put me back on to my digestive herbs. so that plus the needles today, and another appt next Monday which should be just after OV (yipee!) Interesting, woke up yesterday and really felt like going for a run (i normally hate running and walking outside). I felt amazing and ran nearly 2kms non stop! I happened to mention this at acupuncture just in conversation and she said that was really interesting that I had an urge to move right when my cycle is moving to ovulation, which is when movement and blood flow is most necessary and important...my body doing what it is supposed to, pretty cool huh!
I had CM volume increase dramatically today, still watery but massive change, so thinking OV can't be far off. let the BD marathon begin!

Hey charly, I can thoroughly recommend chinese acupuncture, has really helped my cycle this month, might be my first normal period since coming off the pill 12 months ago! I wouldn't worry about your LP just yet, especially since you have had a recent loss, it might take a couple of cycles for your body to settle back in to a rythym. acupuncture helps to speed that process up.
was really happy with my appt on Monday. My appt last week triggered Ovulation on CD14 for the first time ever! so that was great. and my moods are still awesome, although my skin is still causing havoc, we are working on that with chinese herbs still. will report in again next week !

Full on pizza face all down by my chin / jaw... I counted seven pimples today! Wonder how many tomorrow Is acupuncture helpful for this sort of thing do you think?

Hi charly, acupuncture and tcm (traditional chinese medicine) definitely works with skin breakouts. They see breakouts on the skin as an example of what is going on in every cell in your body, they call it "turbidity" or that's what my lady does call it, basically digestion is the issue, body struggling to clear waste so reflects in skin etc. be prepared to answer questions about bowel movements! The combination of herbs and needles is working well for me but slowly, I hope u get the same results!
Also, there are foods to avoid, bananas, peanuts, dairy products except for yoghurt. Have lemon in water every morning, or even 15 mins before every meal if u can. Helps your stomach with digesting food properly.

Hang in there charly, hormones are definitely the problem by the sounds of things! Will also explain why your temps are a bit crazy - mine were really bad too. Acupuncture made a massive difference. Did u have morning sickness at all? Apparently if u have skin breakouts and therefore digestive issues in tcm, u are more likely to have bad morning sickness...I found that really interesting
To be honest, acupuncture is just helping me feel like I am doing something, plus I'm keeping my mind off ttc quite a bit, planning the big move back to nz for good! Can't wait

Ha, eating lemons is fine kalimirella, if you can eat them straight!! So long as its before a meal, to get stomach acidity up to help with digestion of foods. My acupuncture is 68 a session in Aussie, with herbs 30-45 a week, doing weekly this month them dropping back next month to try and save a bit. Triggered ovulation much earlier for me which is awesome!

Kalimirella - my acupuncture was $80 for first appointment and $65 for weekly appt after that. Supplemennts I've been taking are extra. Vineyard, how long have you been there and when do you move back? Sounds very exciting!!

wow charly, that is really interesting! sounds like you could really benefit from it.
I don't know of any practitioners to recommend in ChCh Tan, hoping someone else will be able to suggest someone?
I actually got some names from my practitioner here - one lady is based in Lower Hutt, not sure if she sees people but her name is Debra Betts - she writes books and articles that my practitioner recommends. The other is someone in Herne Bay Auckland who is meant to be amazing - her name is Margaret Morris. My practitioner actually worked with Margaret in Melbourne and said she is an absolute wealth of knowledge when it comes to TCM and fertility. Shes also a qualified naturopath and was a nurse for many years too...? very interesting.
I had a great session again today..everything is perfect, my pulse is great. Apparently all my pulse is asking for is ginger?? so thats an easy fix . If I'm not pregnant this month, things are looking really good for next month. now taking a lower dose of herbs for the next 2 weeks, next appt just before OV. acupuncture points for tonight were one in each earlobe, inside of knee/beside shinbone, and one below belly button.
How are everyone else's treatments going? Does anyone know of any great practitioners in the Waikato?

I'm excited too see how the next few months go for you :) sounds promising!
I don't think Debra sees people :( I'm in her area though Welly/Lower Hutt ...I'm looking for a tried and true tcm expert here, pity she's semi retired (i think)

I am going through acupuncture and chinese herbs at the moment. I have PCOS and have been going through FA for clomid for the past 3 years. I have had 3 miscarriages so we have decided to give acupuncture and chinese medicine a go. So far we are in the 'waiting' phase before starting to try - as he wanted us to leave it 3 months, so this is month 3. So far I have seen some improvements in my AF, my sleeping, and he says that my kidney pulse is much better that it was which apparently is important for blood flow to the uterus. Really hoping this helps as we have decided that this is the last chance for us - we can't keep going through the emotional toll and physical toll of MC's so its now or never for us

So have just read back over the posts.... here is some additional info for you from my chinese man - he reckons that my big issue is my kidneys - which apparently has a big impact on fertility and the temperature and blood flow to the uterus. The appointments cost $85 a session, and I am going once a week, then the herbs are on top of that, also I have a fertility oil from him that I need to use twice a day. We are lucky that my parents are paying for the sessions as after watching us go through our 3 soul destroying MCs they want to do something to help. I tend to get needles in my....ankles, legs, knees, stomach, wrist, sometimes elbow, head, ears and forehead - basically a pin cushion. Must admit I HATE every minute of my appointments and can't wait to get out of there, but just have to keep reminding myself of the end goal.

Well stick at the acupuncture and Chinese herbs ladies, 6 weeks of treatments and I just got my bfp! It's been 12 months of ttc and 9 months since a m/c, they got my blood flow back on track and sorted out my skin and its worked. Think I'm in a bit of shock!

YAY VINEYARD THAT IS AWESOME NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Monkeys, I think we have similar issues, apparently my kidneys are causing the issues and I have issues with blood flow and cold.
I get needles in pretty much the same places as you! I have to say, my cycle is getting shorter and shorter (I typically have long ones) so I think it is working!
I saw mine last week and she said she wants to see me twice before ovulation next cycle to work really hard on making me ovulate earlier. Just when I was thinking about the cost she said I could have one of the appointments free ! Thank goodness!
So I have 3 appointments next cycle, and we have a Fertility Associates appointment on 15th August so it will be good to another good go at a BFP before that

Hi everyone, I think most of you know but i got a BFP 10 days ago (yay!) and will be 5 weeks tomorrow, the longest I have stayed pregnant!
I had an appointment last night and found it quite interesting. She felt my pulses and apparently there is one that indicates the level of HCG, she felt it for ages and said it feels really strong. She said generally she thinks my body is in a good state to support the pregnancy - here's hoping!!
She put needles in my ankles (to prevent miscarriage), my wrists and the very top of my head which was weird.
Anyway just wanted to update, hope everyone is well x

Awesome Monkeys! Goodluck... I hope the BFP bug bites straight away for you! I'm still seeing my acupuncturist weekly... just got back from seeing her an hour ago. I just feel alot calmer thinking that I am doing something else (other than the medication the RPL clinic have me on) to help this wee bean to stick. She makes me feel hopeful too - when i speak to her she'll say something like "when you're .... weeks we'll do ......" so it gives me hope that this time might be the one. Hi Epic! And Vine if you're still lurking I hope you're doing really well

Yay Monkeys! How exciting! We are needing to wait until at least November.
Red - I'm the same as you. I enjoy going and I feel really calm, like I am doing something good and worthwhile for my body. I feel a lot more accepting of this whole journey, more accepting than I have ever felt before.

YAY Tans... so glad for you. 'Accepting of this journey' is the perfect way to describe it - makes such a difference to feel that way doesn't it.... so, so wish I had done this ages ago - but everything happens when it does for a reason. How often are you going? Nice to 'see' you

Red - I am going once a week. I have herbal stuff to take too and heaps of vitamins! Bit of a walking pill bottle. DH and I have made the financial commitment to do this routine for 3 months and see if it makes a difference before TTC again. Nice to see your ticker clocking up the days! When is your scan?

That's great tan, sure it'll make a difference. My ticker might be 2 days fast going by LMP lol! Won't bother changing it tho - will just see how we go.... didn't want to do serial hcgs but clinic nurse has asked me to do a couple, have done 4 in total. Last one on Monday was 9550 - up from 2075 the Monday before. When I rang her to check she paused then said it was 'ok' but that I needed to do another one this week 'especially because of levels last pregnancy' - I had to tell her that they were tracking fine right up until scans for the last 2 pregnancies and that that was the only way we knew I'd m/c'd both times, not because of hcg levels. She doesn't make me feel at ease at all... don't like talking to her TBH as I feel flat afterwards Looked at a couple of hcg calculators and I think they're normal? Anyway, acu lady thought they were fine. First scan is from 7 weeks but haven't got an appointment yet... so that'll be the real telling time. Anyway, sorry for vent, main point was to say that of everyone I've seen my acu lady seems to be the only one that really cares on a personal level.... and the pills can only help lol!

Man, I hate medical professionals sometimes! They can be so clinical and fail to make people feel assured. Don't worry about the levels. I remember my doc saying that after about 3000 they become pretty unreliable, and slow down and then a scan is the best thing to go by. I will be praying for you!

Red - You may have seen this link:
http://www.baby2see.com/preconception/hcg.html
It's really helpful. There is a table next to the hcg calculator that shows what the doubling time is according to the level. It says that between 1200 and 6000, the doubling time increases to something like 72 - 96 hours? So I think that sounds about right for where you are at. Positive thoughts coming your way. xx
