Hi,
My partner and I are getting married in April and are quite keen to start TTCing after that. I currently have a mirena in but it's overdue to come out (has been in for 5.5 years). We are going away on honeymoon for 3.5 weeks after the wedding and I really don't want to have my period while away. So my question is, what have people found the side effects of coming off a mirena like? I'm not sure if I should get the mirena out soon and then go on the pill for a couple of months or if I should throw all caution to the wind and just get mirena out the week before wedding. My main concern is having really bad skin and bleeding for the wedding. Recommendations?

I think seeing as its doing no harm in there in the mean time, just to leave it until you get back from your honeymoon, then get it removed and immediately start TTC.
there is no need to wait after having it removed before TTC. the only thing I was told is 'nothing in the vagina and no swiming/bathing for 7 days'

after mine was removed I cramped for a couple of days and bled for 5 days. I was immediately fertile and ovulated that cycle.
very quickly after removal I noticed my acne was returning and now (10months later) its worse than it ever has been.

Hey Tissy,
Thanks for your response. We have decided to get it out earlier and go on the pill so I won't have any bleeding on wedding or honeymoon. My periods have gotten quite heavy even with mirena and I'm on track to have it at the wedding so I think it needs to come out.

Hey Batmobile, I have had 2 mirenas over 10 years - one after the other and I found them fantastic. I used the Mirena to control endometriosis and it has been great.

I had my mirena removed last May and had a period two weeks later. Two weeks after that, we conceived our first baby. The difference between the mirena and the pill is that the mirena releases progeterone locally into the uterus, while the pill is in your entire system. When the mirena is removed you might get a bit of cramping and possibly bleeding (I didn't, but others do), but there is nothing to get rid of in your system (unlike the pill). If you want to conceive quickly after removing the goalie, your best bet is to keep the Mirena. You will have heavier bleeding now because your Mirena really needs replacing.

Because it's over due, I would actually get it replaced and then remove it when you want to conceive. You could time the replacement so you don't get bleeding over the honeymoon.
