Hi there,
My wee girl recently had an x-ray to check her hips as she had asymmetrical thigh creases. The x-ray results have shown that her left hip is not right...the ball is out of the socket and the socket itself is malformed. So we are looking at hip dysplasia, just waiting to hear on when we will get an appointment with a specialist to find out how severe it is and where to from here. I guess I'm just interested in hearing about anyone elses experiences with this condition? I'm in obsessive information collecting stage (!!) as my GP couldn't tell me very much at all. Also how long you waited from getting x-ray results to hearing from the hospital (we have been referred to starship).
Thanks in advance for your time

Hi Dot2012. Was it just asymmetrical thigh creases that you noticed or did the hip click also? I'm just looking at my daughter, who is the same age as yours, and wonder if I need to get her checked. I have a plunket check next week, was it the plunket nurse or GP who noticed the creases? Thanks!

Hi Dot2012, while i'm no help whatsoever at this stage, a good friend of mine has bi-lateral hip dysplasia (27 yo) and although it can be a pain at times, it doesn't stop her from doing (nearly) anything and she has a great life. Not sure if that helps even remotely though! There are some great docs at Starship so I'm sure your girl will be in great hands! All the best!

Hi Nats-mum, no her hip didn't click at all and she was cleared by my GP at all her well-child visits. Reason that it didn't click is because it is completely dislocated...it only clicks if it is in the socket but loose. It was my plunket nurse who noticed the creases and inisted on the x-ray referral...thank goodness for Plunket!
Thanks ereynolds...that does help :)

Yes, my plunket nurse picked up the uneven creases on my boy, luckily for us it was just a growth period. It's a check that they do each time.
Hope you get all your answers soo Dot

Just found out that she will require minor surgery and will then be in a Spica Cast for 12 weeks + brace for 6 weeks. Actually feel better about it now knowing what we are in for, let the count down begin. Good luck Nats-mum, definately worthwhile getting it checked

Our daughter had uneven leg creases and is now in a brace, has been for nearly 2 months. He hips are not dislocated, her sockets are just not deep enough. We have an appt later this month to see how things are progressing. If its not working she will need an operation which I think they do when they are a bit older. She handles her brace fine! I hate it, I feel sorry for her being so restricted on the floor.....but it will be worth it later on down the track. Good luck, hope everything goes well

Hi Ladies,
Just thought i would point you in the direction of a face book support group for Mums who have children with Hip displasia or other related problems
It is called Spica Mums and Bubs NZ. I joined as my son broke his femur a few months ago and he ended up in a Spica for 5 weeks.
They are a wonderful support base and lots of handy tips etc even for babies that go into Harness etc.
