Hi all,
My second baby has silent reflux like my first did, but this time I am trying going dairy free to see if it makes a difference. I have friends with "regular / big spilling" reflux babies that it has made a huge difference for, but also know others that it made no difference.
I was wondering:
* has anyone found it successful in reducing silent reflux, maybe you have some words of advice or support?
* how long does it take to see if cutting out dairy products does make a difference? (I have heard anything from a few days to up to 3 weeks.)
* will cutting out dairy affect the volume of my supply? (I have been 4 days so far without dairy and either DD is having a growth spurt or my supply is a little lower at the moment.)
* and can anyone recommend any good dairy free recipe websites? Meals are not so bad but I know I'll miss biscuits etc!
I am about to check out the crying over spilt milk website, but would love some feedback / help / ideas here too please. If my going dairy free makes a difference to my daughter, I will gladly do it, but if it drops my supply, we will find other ways to deal with it as we did with DD#1. Its horrible, but not so bad that we cant handle it with no chance in diet. Hopefully it will ease around 4-6 months as it did with DD#1.
Thanks heaps.

Another question - what about goat or sheep products? Are they considered ok for a dairy free diet?
Luckily none of us, including both girls, have dairy allergies or lactose intolerance, they just have / had weak stomach valves. I know things could be a lot worse, but it is so horrible lying there at night listening to the gagging and choking. It happens even with the bassinet on an angle and holding her upright for 30 minutes after feeding. Day time is fine as we have wraps and mei tais - life savers!

My gal had silent reflux. I think dairy gets a bad rap overall but some dairy items in my diet were clearly stirring things up. The screaming after I ate ice cream was particularly bad. Anyway, for us it took only a couple of days dairy free to notice an improvement but we still needed medication for her. Eliminating dairy from cooking didn't have any effect though, just milk (replaced with oat milk), ice cream, cheese and yoghurt. Oh, coffee and alcohol made her worse too. Even a single small glass of wine 10 hours before a feed (she was sleeping through) and she'd be screaming after that next feed.
No supply issues with me. Shouldn't I think if you're eating well overall.
See if you can borrow an exersaucer too. Kiara couldn't lie to play for a couple of months so it gave her a chance to play without being in pain.
Reflux totally sux. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Welcome to the delightful world of dairy free (sarc)
Just use your normal recipes and subsitute dairy free marg & ricemilk/soy/oat for cows milk.
For us, taking dairy out stops the projectile vomits. And that's pretty much by the next day, to clear dairy fully takes around 3 or so weeks. And you need to look cause dairy is in lots of stuff in the form of whey or casein or lactose. Now days it's usually printed in bold under the ingredients if there is any allergens in there.
Goat & sheep are A2 protein, so you could be ok simply by switching to goats products. Dairy is predominantly A1 protein, although at Countdown you can buy A2 cows milk.
Never had an issue with a supply drop, you'll be in the midst of the 6 week growth spurt!
My middle kid was the silent refluxer. He saying grace was his Nuk dummy. Plus losec was the drug that helped him out, the other two didn't seem to help so much.

Thanks both of you.
I am finding an improvement in the silent reflux at night, but not the day spilling, not that its huge anyway, she isnt a projectile vomiter. However, I am not liking the change in poos. Big, runny, leaking from nappy every couple of days rather than a little bit each feed.
