We're going to be staying in Auckland for bout a week in October, over labour weekend which is why were we are looking at accomodation now. We're probably going to spending most of our time on the north shore but were also thinking of staying in Epsom as it's close to the motorway and we thought it was a good location when previously staying with family there.
If anyone could recommend good hotels/motels in either Epsom or the North shore that would be great. Or other hotels that are close to those areas.
TIA.

We're going to be staying there for a week, plus in Taupo so can't afford anything expensive, under $150 if we can get a decent place.

Have you thoughtof trying a Holiday Park motel unit or cabin? They usually pretty reasonable. There is Auckland North Shore Motels and Holiday Park. Other wise I think Ocean Inn Motel in North Shore is spose to be nice (according to some product reports I've had at work - i think its that one anyway) and dependent on the time of year can start (usually 2 people) around $90 per night.
Otherwise try www.aatravel.co.nz or www.wotif.com

We recently stayed at the Park Lane Motel in Takapuna (right at the end of the main road into Takapuna/Devonport). Very handy for both areas and the motorway. I think it was $140 a night and that included continental breakfast which I thought was very reasonable. We stayed there for two nights and would stay again.

I've had a look at this place yonks ago and it's in a really nice setting, very quiet. About 15 mins drive to the CBD off peak. The rates look quite reasonable.

Not really in the area youre looking at but i recently stayed at the Bianco off Queen, which we all loved. We had a 2 bedroom apartment for $137 a night, has full kitchen, washing machine and dryer & continental breakfast

Maybe have a look at bookabach or holidayhouses? Could be cheaper in the long run if you can get a reduced rate for the week etc?
