I was wondering if anyone here had obstetric cover in their health insurance? If so, what does it cover you for? Is there a waiting period before obstetrics is covered?
I'd appreciate any info or advice anyone has regarding this.
Thanks.

Last time i checked we were covered under the Southern Cross Ultra for up to $2,500 for pregnancy cover. I think you had to be signed up for a year??

Depends on the policy - generally not covered under my Southern Cross Policy but as a long term member they 'gift' me a certain amount of cover per pregnancy.

Give the company a call - the people in the call centre were very helpful when I asked.

Thanks for your replies guys.
I don't think I'll bother getting health insurance if they make you wait over a year before covering obstetrics. DH and I have already started TTC so it wouldn't be worth it. Plus the amount they pay out isn't even cover the obtetricians fees which I believe are around $3500.
I'll just leave it and either pay the obstetrician myself or go public.
Thanks.

With Southern Cross there is def a period that you have to have been a member for (can't remember off-hand what it is but a year minimum). Depending on the plan it's either $1,500 or $2,500 per claims year (based on when you sign up) - so if you are pregnant over 2 claims years then you can claim 2 years worth...
ie - your claims anniversary date is 1st Oct and you fall pregnant in May and are due in Feb then you can claim your entitlement x 2
