Hey,
My nine month old baby boy has developed quite bad acne on his face. He had nothing as a baby, and has only developed this in the last two months since he has been on formula (previously exclusively breastfed). I've tried a couple different brands of formula, but it hasn't cleared up. I haven't tried goat/soy though, as not sure if it's necessarily a dairy reaction as he's otherwise fine and happy, no tummy upsets or anything.

Any thoughts on what else could cause this and if there's anything to treat it? Thought it would just clear up naturally but doesn't seem to be!

Thanks!

We had this too, at the same point (ie switching from EBF to formula). It turned out to be a teething rash and the milk thing was just a coincidence. I can say that with confidence because ever since then he has got exactly the same bad rashy acne on his face when teething, every time, usually worse on one side than the other. It doesn't bother him at all but I hate it :)

In terms of treatment, I don't think anything (other than perhaps hydrocortisone which you would only want to use sparingly) will actually take it away but you can do things to avoid aggravating it or making it worse. Our plunket nurse recommended Health-E Fatty Cream which is available from pharmacies. It is basically a barrier cream which we smear on the affected area before meals so that the rash isn't affected by food that gets on his face, and also sometimes before bed as well just to protect the area from rubbing or scratching. DS is now 2 and still gets it from time to time (he just got over a bout of it - I think he is getting his 2 year molars). When it is really bad we put a bit of hydrocortisone on and that does a great job but as i say, you only want to use that rarely.

Good luck :)

Thanks pumpkino! He did start teething at about the same time as we moved to formula, so that definitely explains it! Got his two bottom teeth nearly two months ago and now going through the same thing with his top ones. Will definitely try the fatty cream, and good to know it sounds like it will eventually go. cheers,
