So today we saw the ENT and our 2yo is now booked in for her tonsils and adenoids to be removed, and grommets put in - next thursday.

Naturally I am a little freaked out and scared about the op, but my oldest daughter had hers out at 5 so I kind of know what to expect. My concern is her age....how well is she likely to cope with the op and the recovery being only 23 months??

Any one got any advice on what to expect and cope etc???

Thanks

My 3 year old DD just had her tonsils and adenoids out (on tuesday) and she has been pretty good. I tried to explain what would happen but she was still pretty upset before hand (she refused to put the hospital PJs on and had to be held down by me and the nurse so the anethetist could put the mask on her face). She hasn't really wanted to eat much but other than that has been bouncing around today like normal. She has spent most of the day just playing quietly and watching TV but she's happy enough.
The ENT told me basically the younger they are the quicker they seem to recover and for us that's certainly the case.

The only real issue I have had is getting her to take the pamol and brufen - she had to be held down to take it in hospital and she spat some at me last night. I have just had to suck it up and force it into her coz she doesn't understand she will be in a lot of pain if she doesn't take it.

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions just let me know.

Thanks Shelt for you response.

It does help alot- I am hoping that seen as she is younger she will bounce back okay.
We can take our own pj's in for the operation which is good, and at this stage she is first on the list because of her age, so we may just go there in her PJ's - prevent the drama of trying to get changed

What sort of foods do you give your DD to try and eat?

I was thinking soft foods - mashed bananas, yoghurts - maybe smoothies??

I hope your DD is doing well and things ease up on the medicine front
Thanks

DS will take medicine really well if I give him the syringe to do himself!

Lillis- hope it all goes well next week. Both my kids had minor surgery last year- Aiden was 15 months, and he coped a lot better with being nil-by-mouth before-hand than Isla did at 4yrs old. He was also first-on the list and fortunatly slept in, so we all got ready to leave home while he slept then got him up and straight off to hopsital in pj/s and then there was heaps of distractions there and he wasnt bothered about no breakfast!

The hardest thing was watching them being put under anethetic. The gas in the mask that they breathe, makes them get floppy, or stiff first then floppy, and their eyes get a "possum in the headlights" stare, then roll back,....then u have to leave them like that- that is the worst bit.

They will give her lemonade iceblocks, and I would get a stash for at home too, or make some in advance.

My DD is refusing to eat at the moment. The op was only on Tuesday so not that long ago so I am not too worried. She gets the odd mouthful down and is not exactly fading away. She's drinking plently too which was really my main concern as she wouldn't drink for the first few hours afterwards.

I brought ice cream and jelly plus lemonade iceblocks (none of which she will eat). Also some chocolate dairy food which is a major treat in our house (I've never brought it before for her). I've been offering all of the above plus regular yoghurt, banana, watermelon, grapes (cold from the fridge) and then just regular food. Yesterday she ate two bites from a bowl of cereal, a box of raisins and a quarter of a chocolate yoghurt.I think the day before that she just had a biscuit and half a milo all day.

She's been really good on the medicine front today so long may that continue!

I didn't really notice the whole going limp, eyes rolling back thing but then my DD was struggling so hard that mostly I just noticed that she stopped screaming and relaxed! And this sounds terrible but I didn't have any trouble walking away either, the thing I found the worst was when she was in recovery and she was moaning and whimpering and I was just like awwww my poor baby I think maybe coz she has been so sick over the last couple of years I was glad she was getting them out and was in good hands but once she came out she was in pain and a bit confused and I found that hard.

Hope the op goes well for you Lillis.

I guess they all react differently when going under anesethic- neither of mine struggled with the mask- so they were just sitting on the bed sucking the grass then went rigid, the floppy and the eyes thing.
Both my kids only had very minor surgerys so werent sore much at all afterwards, and DS was still bf at the time- and cos it was eye surgery and not mouth/throat, he had no trouble feeding and basiclaly com fort suckers for about 45mins as he was coming out fo the anethesitc, then jumped up and started playing, lol!

I hope your little girl is better soon Shelt.
