Hi there,

So I have PCOS and when we were TTC last time I was referred to the public hospital system and they discovered I wasn't ovulating on my own (everything else was all perfectly normal, like egg quality etc). On my first unmonitored cycle of clomid I got pregnant. Anyway, we have been thinking about the next so I started charting a few months ago (not temps, just cycle length and CM). I am 99% sure I ovulated on my own last month (I had loads of eggwhite CM, could feel lots of twinges in my ovary area...all feelings I had only had when I did the cycle of clomid) My cycle length has also been a consistent 37 days which I have never experienced in my whole AF life!

So all excited I thought that the same would happen this month but it hasn't....so basically I have a few questions:

-is it possible to ovulate alternate cycles?
-is there a natural alternative to clomid I could try?
-how much does a private cycle of clomid cost? (by the time I get referred to the hospital again on the public system, it will be however many months...I have left it kind of late but I don't want the age gap to be too huge between my son and the next and just kind of thought my body had fixed itself through pregnancy....as naive as that may sound)

I would one to hear of anyone's experiences that may be similar?

HI there, I can help with a couple of your questions

Is it possible to Ovulate alternate cycles - Yes definitely!! There can be a few reasons for this from what I understand, i have PCOS but don't OV on my own every month.
Sorry can't help on the natural alternatives
Through Fertility associates I pay $275 for a monitored cycle of Clomid. If you self refer and advise you have PCOS your first consultation may be free - it was for me anyway.

Good luck, hope you have some success soon! Also have you joined in the charting thread? There are a group of us in there that are all charting, and are a great support , and where people can help you try and interpret your chart

Hi there, like Monkeys I self referred to FA and as I have PCO my first appt was also fully funded.

I have done 6 cycles on clomid with no luck, and I also see a naturopath who gave me a herbal mixture that included vitex to help with regulating my cycles and ovulating. There is quite a bit of info online about vitex.

I was unmonitored for my clomid cycles through my OB/GYN, just had blood tests. I saw her every few months and paid $120 and then paid $15 every 3 months for my clomid. You could try a OB/GYN but not all do the scans (and you would have to pay for them - I think around $200) so sometimes you may over-respond or under-respond and not know till after your blood test.

All the best

There's an Estrosoy compound you can take for a natural alternative. I forget where I bought mine, TradeMe or some online pharmacy. It cost me around $40 for the bottle of 60 and you only use 10-15 per month. I've read of lots of ladies that have been happy with it. You have to take it specific days of your cycle. I forget exactly which, I want to say from CD 3-7 or something. Best to read up on it or get some kind of guidance though! There's a specific dosage you want as well as specific days to take it. Anyhow, it's called Estrosoy and has soy isoflavones.

I got mine to try and start ovulating when I was breastfeeding but it didn't work.

If you're interested in natural options, I'd go see a naturopath who specialises in fertility stuff. There are things out there that are meant to help, but I'd personally rather have an expert assess my situation. Some people do seem to have success that way, its well worth a shot if you're keen.

On ovulating only some cycles, yes absolutely. Apparently, with things like PCOS you can often be most fertile when you first get your period back after having a baby, which would match your situation. It worked for me - after a long time trying with our son, we get pregnant with our daughter straight after my first AF. So keep trying

A monitored clomid cycle costs between $250 - $300. That's with blood tests and scans to see how many follicles are developing. A Dr (just a GP, doesn't need to be anything fancy) can prescribe clomid without all the scans for a lot less. Some are reluctant to, though, in case you end up with octuplets

Thanks so much ladies!

I haven't joined monkeys, I am only charting CM and Af days etc so would it still be worthwhile?

Bky- I have heard of that too...could be interesting. Might do some more research on that one.

Hopes- I think the reason I was thinking natural was so I wouldn't have to wait to be referred to the hospital etc like last time BUT if my GP can prescribe it that could be the go? Even though I went through a ob gyn (who actually also worked in a private fertility practice) he didn't monitor me at all, just gave me three 50mg doses and sent me on my merry way with instructions!

I'm not sure a GP can prescribe it? I had really wonky cycles after a MC several years ago and my GP did some blood tests said I 'might' have PCOS (I might, but irregularity isn't usually a problem for me) and talked about giving me clomid. She said it had to be prescribed by a specialist though so I would have to wait for a referral.

I thought they could... it's quite possible I'm wrong, though. It wouldn't take much to check, at least.

The other option, if they couldn't, would be to self-refer to a specialist who'll let you do unmonitored cycles. The first appointment wouldn't be that much, ours was only about $90. I'd pay that rather than wait, and you'd have no other costs if you were unmonitored.

ETA That the lassie has a rash, and I'm taking her to the Dr tomorrow if it hasn't cleared up. I'll ask then for you

Blondie - it is my understanding that GP's in NZ are allowed to prescribe clomid but very few are willing to and prefer to send you to a specialist.

Hi there, I am interested in how you get on. I also have PCOS and was on Fenate to conceive, and I was fortunate to conceive first cycle. We also hope to have another baby soon so I'm unsure as to whether try naturally (my cycles are about 35 days, a lot shorter than pre-baby) or just go back to the specialist without mucking around.

Perhaps Ring around the fertility specialists and ask what a consultation will cost - you may be able to self-refer, but if not, your GP can do ti. From memory each visit to the specialists cost me about $80.

I think that doctors want to monitor your cycles on Clomid, in case the medication makes you uber-fertile and you end up with multiple ova, as the risk obviously is multiple pregnancies.

My understanding is that local GPS do not prescribe clomid!!! MY GP said that very few do like the reasons in previous posts overstimulation...cysts can develop and multiples and they just don't want to have to worry about it.
Even my OB wasn't that keen to prescribe it not that I knew that I needed it until I went FA in Hamilton. I so think you should go to a fertility specialist as they are so on the ball with monitoring and blood tests and dosage amounts etc etc. And also I have PCOS and everyone is so different with their symptoms and how it effects you personally. SOme people have more the insulin resistance side of PCOS so they need metformin or some people have lots of problems with cysts etc.

Hi Blondie - I've found with my PCOS the best way to track if I'm ovulating or not each cycle is to track my temperatures. On annovulatory cycles my temp seems to be all over the place, and when I ovulate I have texbook temp changes.
I too found that I went from completely annovulatory before having my son after 4 rounds of clomid to having reasonably normal cycles a lot of the time. I still miss cycles though (currently I'm in week 9 lol - body skipped last cycle, but temps have come back on track so I'm pretty certain I ovulated 11 days ago now). Still can't get preggers through due to DHs problems to compound things.
If you're in Auckland, I think fertility plus is the cheapest specialist for getting clomid. I've been through fertility associates (FA), and always done monitored cycles, but my sister who got pregnant easily through clomid was able to go back to them and do unmonitored cycles to have her second child which was much cheaper.

No you shouldn't. Just putting my 2 cents worth in. I bought Clomid online. I got pregnant the first round! It has always been hard for me to get pregnant because of a shortened luteal phase.
