Not sure if Topic already been spoken about.

I am not a Grandparent or near this time in life, however would be nice to hear any Grandparents stories out there? of taking Care full time or Temporary any grandchild/ren.

Not a lot is spoken about this, despite many Grandparents can get to age just when they feel they can enjoy their Grandchildren, only to find through " unforeseen circumstances" family break ups etc that they feel they are parenting little ones all over again, and how did they cope.

Can be good to hear your story to inspire others.

I've come across quite a few grandparents in the work I do, who have ended up full-time caring for their grandchildren - often due to parent relationship break-ups, illness or other circumstances. While they've found it stressful, exhausting and difficult, they've all said they believed it was the best option for the children, and as their grandparents, it was the very least they could do to help.
I've heard in some areas, there are grandparent support groups running. There's definitely a big need out there.

Can I just put it out there that if you do know of grandparents that are full time carers I know that the pakuranga children's healthcamp so imagine all of them do offer a service for grandparents raising grandchildren for a week long respite over school holidays. Anyone can refer so self referrals are fine. So if you know of anyone that is in this situation pls mention it. http://www.healthcamps.org.nz/kidzacool.html - Kid cool

Great to hear, yes good Grandparents can be the hub of families as to say, and can provide valuable support, good to recognize them to.

My mum is 56yrs old has had 6 children of her own. Has 13 grandchildren and is bringing up my brothers 1year old boy. She has had him since he was 7months old. He was removed from his parents and my mum steped up to take him and she is about to be given custody. She loves it and really enjoys having him. She does also have a 13 year old son so she did have a child still at home

.... deserves a Medal -:) as no doubt she loves them all very much.Nice to give them the Grandparents recognition for the work they do, even more so has they do this from their hearts.( Grandparents that do this often maybe only on a pension at times, may not get other financial help) that can be hard. The Grandparents like this work hard to keep all happy.

You Mum sounds a very good sort, you must be very proud of her -:)

Was a very interesting to see this family on TV, then a short debate, that Grandparents struggling, should be given same benefit support help as of and when the children where with parents.

But one woman speaker tried reason as to why Grandparents are not entitled, which never made sense anyway, as same money would be given to say a Care giver, or to the parents had they been in the picture.

Also was interesting to see stats last night on this Doco, that there are about 10,00 NZ kids that are looked after "full time", by Grandparents.

Sad to see such lovely Grandparents that doing a amazing Full time job that they never planned they would have to be in at their age and time of life, not shown more worth. ( they had looked after all X6 1 of which has special needs , all for the past 5 or so yrs and will do for the rest of their life)

But good to see lest that they had a voice last night, and one positive speaker was backing them, that all NZ could see.
