I am just recovering from my third bout of mastitis in 5 weeks (and this time I got it in both breasts ). For those of you who have had recurring bouts of mastitis and stopped breastfeeding, at what point did you decide to throw in the towel? I'm not seriously thinking about it yet as DD is only 10 weeks but it is so physically draining and makes looking after 2 girls almost impossible when you are feverish.
If it keeps coming back regularly over the next couple of months I will think about giving up. Mine is not latch related or poor feeding but I am very run down so my immune system is taking a beating and am getting sick often. I'm on high dose vit c and antibiotics.

Have you seen this link? Lots of help on the Kelly Mom site, maybe there is stuff you haven't tried to make it easier and reduce your chances of getting it again.

My friend swears by putting your breast into hot salty water- as hot as you can stand, let it soak for 5 minutes then feed/pump the breast until completely empty. Do this every time you feed of that side.
Also make sure you are taking probiotics to help restore the good bacteria in your guts, antibiotics just kill everything and make it much more likely for your system to get run down again.
A tablespoon of wheatgerm and brewers yeast in the morning, as well as some kelp and you will be getting almost all of the vitamins and minerals you need. You can get them cheap as from Bin Inn, and the kelp from a health food store. This will help heaps with your vitamin/mineral intake. Good luck :)

I can so sympathise with you It is so tiring so good on you for sticking at it.
I changed feeding to one side only each feed, so each time I fed I would empty one breast, and then express from the other to ease the discomfort. Feed from the other breast next feed and so on. Your body will adjust the supply to meet the demand so eventually you won't need to express from the side you didn't feed from.
This seemed to work for me so you could give it a go.
Have you contacted a La Lech League representative? They may have some helpful suugestions for you.

Thanks for the replies- I am still on antibiotics so feel great (for now). I have been block feeding the whole time, I really think it's related to being so run down second time around.
I need to look at my vitamin intake and make sure I'm getting enough of the good ones.
