Two and a half years ago I gave birth to our son in the USA. We have now returned to Wellington, NZ and I am desperately trying to find some new medical care. When we were back for a visit I went to my old GP but was shocked at how casual she was as a GP as opposed to the Paediatrician care we received in the US. I understand that Paediatrician are only seen in NZ for serious situations, however I would like some really competent care nonetheless. Could anyone please suggest a great GP near Wellington Central (we are Oriental Bay), a GP that would be great as a doctor for our son and also a great GP for me ... who is now facing some conception issues. Many thanks in advance.

You could try Plimmer Surgery. Dr Diane Hodges has been my GP for 16 years and also my mother's, sisters & niece & nephew.

However she is only part-time these days and I'm not sure if she is taking on new patients.

ETA: I imagine you can probably see a paedeatrician if you go private.

I used to be with City Medical Centre and found them really great until I went on maternity leave and thought the travel would be too much (we live out in Porirua area). my MIL is with City GP's and they think they are really great..

Thanks Danda08 and Chickadeedoo for your helpful responses and suggestions.

In my research I did actually come across City Medical Centre. I found that a doctor there, Dr Andrew Holmes, who is certified by the American Board of Paediatrics (which would be great for our son) and another, Dr Louise Boyd, has an Obstetrics qualification. Did you have any experience with either of these doctors chickadeedoo whilst using the practice? After contacting them they say they are accepting patients so given their qualifications, proximity and your vote of confidence chickadeedoo I think I will try them out.

I was with Louise and she is so great and listens to everything - go with her if you can.

We go to Dr Clair O'Brien at City GPs. She's FANTASTIC.
I used live in the city and it was really convenient. Now I'm in the burbs but I don't want to change because she's been so good.

Many thanks IsaacsMum for that recommendation. I am going to try Dr Boyd at the City Medical Centre – but it’s great to have another name should I need it.
Thanks for being helpful.
