Soak your hair in tea tree and vinegar, then put heaps of conditioner in your hair and leave it in. Get a knit comb, and have a very patient person to comb them out. The vinegar should kill them, and the conditioner drowns them so you can slowly pick them out. If you get them before they lay eggs you should be fine. Otherwise repeat in a couple of days, and comb every day to check for eggs. No need for nasty chemicals :)

To kill the live lice you can mix some salt, tea tree oil, dishwashing liquid and peppermint oil. (some people say listerine but i'm not sure about putting that on a little ones head.)
If you don't have all of those, just use what you can, they all kill lice in some way (the dishwashing liquid is particularly good because if you leave it on it makes it very easy to comb the lice out.
These only really kill live lice though so it is just a temp fix until you can find something more powerful.
Oh and also people say to cover your head in mayo, wrap it with glad wrap and leave it on for a couple of hours (a similar idea to the dishwashing liquid i think)

Hair straighteners kill the lice and make the hair folicle (sp?) so smooth that they can not cling to the hair.
When the hair is wet the lice and eggs are easier to see and can be carefully pulled out. (Mum used to have to do this for me when nit shampoo stopped working )
ETA: apparently they are most likely to be found around the ears.
