Subject: When did your AF return?

Hi all,
Just wondering how long after baby did your period come back? DH and I are looking to start trying again next year (when DD is 1)
I thought AF would come back once I stopped BF - I stopped all together at the end of Sept (I got her to 4 months at least!) But before then I was down to just one night feed for about 3 weeks.
So I know we are all different and everyone's body does things in their own way, but just for reference - when did your AF come back?
Thanks heaps,
N00b

This probably doesn't help you as I am still breastfeeding, but AF didn't return for me until 10months PP.
I have a feeling there are a few related threads on it, perhaps do a search.

Yeah AF came back straight away for me too...grrrr but I was on the mini-pill, so I think that helped her along.

AF came back at 4 months, BFing every 3 hours during the day, but she slept through the night early on so maybe why it came back so early? Managed to conceive #2 while BFing though

Thanks ladies - I did try and do a search, but perhaps I'm not using the correct keywords.
Will just have to wait and see I guess. As much as I love not having AF I really would like her to come back soon so I can start charting/trying again soon-ish.
Cheers,
n00b

With DS it came back right away, was was fully FF.
With DD it came back around the 3 month mark despite fully BF'ing, but she did start sleeping through early on so that's probably a factor

I was breastfeeding DS at least 3hourly day and night when we conceived this one (after one month of TTC) and very very irregular cycles, sobyou don't necessarily need AF to get pg again.

Nothing for me yet either... 12.5mths, and I am BF, although these days (and for the past month or so) only 2-3 times in 24hrs.
Never wanted AF more in my life!

15+ months and nothing. Tried pretty much everything short of actually stopping BF, though that's on the agenda for the next few weeks.

almost 10 months so far and nothing here. I am still BFing though. I am OVing and have been for about 4 months. AF can stay away forever as far as Im concerned... as long as I am still OVing when DD is 2 next year so we can try for #2 Im happy!
Can anyone explain how I am OVing and not getting AF?? My mum swore I couldnt be OVing if no AF but obviously it happens... Just curious how that works?

What makes you sure you're ovulating?
I didn't think you could OV and not get AF. You can have AF and not be ovulating but pretty sure it doesn't happen the other way... Ovulating sets off a hormonal chain of events that end in AF unless the egg is fertilised. Well, that's my understanding of how it works anyway!! Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure!

10mths after I stopped breastfeeding! I had no idea it could take that long - and started to worry I had early menopause (I'm 36yo). But then looked it up online and it can take that long - so good useful info for those who haven't got it back yet!!

Jaune I'm assuming she's doing Ovulating tests. You can ovulate without having AF - remember the midwife saying "just because you are breastfeeding and haven't got your period doesn't mean you can't get pregnant!" and giving you a script for the pill and 20,000 condoms which you never use???

10 months after you stopped?! That's mad nathansmummy.
I've heard it said that it comes back when it would have if you were still breastfeeding (and I always figured that was a sort of old wives tale type thing), but have never heard of it taking more than 3 months, and that for those who stopped early postpartum, but 10 months yikes. That's one of my huge fears, that I'm going to wean my kid to get my fertility back and it won't come back for ages.

Oh dear - yeah.. nothing ever turns out the way we want it to, does it? I wanted to have a family and I'm a single mum.. I wanted to have a 2nd baby and at the moment it's looking unlikely.
Don't know your circumstances but the best thing to do is to let it go and what will be will be...
I think in my case it's not very common though if that's of any reassurance ;)

Oh and just to add - you can plan family as best you can but there are things that are outside of your control. My advice would be to breastfeed as long as you are happy to breastfeed and stop contraception when you are ready to start trying for another baby.

Yes - can ovulate and possibly get pregnant before getting AF, but only once because if the egg isn't fertilised you'd get AF.

okay so I did some online reading and I may not have been actually ovulating just assumed I was as I was getting pains and a whole heap of EWCM (sorry, gross I know) which was all I have gone off in the past.
http://www.bellytales.com/2006/03/06/ovulation-duing-lactation/ - This explains it better than I could but basically egg ripens but not released when BFing, so maybe that was why I was getting symptoms!
Sorry about the threadjack

AF not returned yet either and fully BF. Not sleeping through night at all so still 3-4 hourly. We are hoping to try just after DS turns one as we have way too many birthday around May/June! But excited to try again :)

Well I was ovulating and not getting AF but did get pregnant and MC a few times but didn't get AF in between. Specialist said it was weird but happens - the body is more complex than we'll ever understand. I also didn't get AF back for over 10 months after I stopped BFing.

Wow, thanks for all the responses!
I have always had a sneaky AF - a week after I posted this, she returned!
By sneaky I mean she will come - late or early, when I least expect it. Or I think she has gone - she stays away for a day, then she comes back, just to ruin a nice pair of underpants!
Right, now just have to get used to having her back (and to get the big bag of pads and things I put away while I was PG)
Cheers,
n00b

I had no AF in between pregnancies. Was BF and when DD was 3 months old I was pregnant with DS - no AF in between so yes you can ovulate without AF. After DS was born I think was about 4 months before AF. It was nice to not have AF for 2 years!
edited for spelling!

I agree that you can get pregnant without AF, but had you not fertilised that egg and got pregnant you would've got AF...
