Rainbow Springs, Paradise Valley (have a lion cub to pat and should still be young enough by then to be available), Agrodome for the sheep show, Poly pools for a few.

Mind you, have never tried these with a 1 year old!

There's also the Aquatic Centre for the kiddies pool.

There is a nice walk up the Hamurana spring that you can see the trout in the water etc, took DH's 3yo cousin and he loved it

There is also a walk up the Ngongotaha Stream which according to my neighbour is lovely.

On weekends at the lake front there is usually a market, mini fire engine rides, and a couple of playgrounds that are neat for kids.

HTH - Tauranga or the Mount are only 40mins away so you could always spend a day at the beach if you are not keen on the lakes?

my 18month old loved patting the lion, he also loved the luge. But 1 year old probably not so suited!

Theres a neat playground on the lake edge, and the site seeing helicopters and boats go from there too, so DS loved watching them come and go.

poly pools were ok, but overpriced for what they were, I reckon a heated pool in a hotel would be better (and cheaper)

We stayed at a rotorua hideaway lodge, was cheap and not too fancy but they had llamas, pigs, dogs cows sheep and ducks on site so every morning while DH slept in DS and I went farming. It was neat fun for him being a city boy!

We went to paradise springs on the weekend and it was fun, the kids really enjoyed feeding the fish and patting the lion cubs, they were 7 weeks old, and they also do a feeding of the lions show at 2.30 which can be a bit gruesome but interesting.   park down by the lake front is great and they have markets on Saturday mornings down there. I love the food street just up from that.
