One of my friends told me a really funny story: Her husband decided to take the placent home after the birth of their child. When they got home he put it in the freezer as he didn't know what to do with it. When he finally decided to plant a Placenta Tree, he got the placenta out of the freezer and put it in the microwave to defrost it!!
What did you do with your placenta? Have you heard any funny/crazy/interesting stories? |

I planted mine. It's under a blueberry bush. It did live in the freezer for nearly a year as well. I didn't use the microwave to defrost it though... ------------- 7/2010, 10/2012 and 1/2015 |

Mines still sitting in the freezer. Came in a pretty green box! So I hope that puts anyone off from trying to eat it or anything! It's actually at my grandparents house!
A bit of a story that's kinda crazy/interesting... A friend of mine's mother kept all their placenta's and even pulled them out to show us when we were about 11 (  ). Anyway, they got burgled and it was the Placenta's and some other meat that was stolen along with some other things (electronics etc). ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Funny as I've just been thinking we need to get it out of the freezer and plant it as it's been 11 months now! I'm thinking we might plant it for his 1st birthday. It's in an ice-cream container and my sister got it out thinking it was ice-cream and said 'eugh - mince!' (she's vegetarian). When we told her what it was she thought we were hippies! (I'm English living in NZ, she was over from UK where it's virtually unheard of - correct me if I'm wrong!)

As DH is part maori, we felt a strong pull to keep ours, it was what kept our children alive for so long after all & is just as much part of us as the end result.
So #1 got buried at our family holiday home with the ashes of a dog that I'd PTS while I was pregnant. So like she's got a guardian with her. I still haven't buried #2 as up til now I've not been ready to bury the ashes of the dog I PTS while I was pregnant with him. My first one went under a tree in my midwife's garden (home birth).
This next one will be encapsulated (turned into pills) so I get all the benefits of it. As far as I know there is only one person in NZ encapsulating placentas and selling DIY kits, but it is certainly growing in popularity to consume your placenta in the postpartum period. I'm doing it mostly for the energy boost (solo mum of a toddler, I'll need all the help I can get), and also to prevent the blues. |

I left mine in the hospital. No interest in keeping it. The only person I've heard of keeping it planted it too close to the root bundle of the maple tree it was under and killed the tree!!! lol! -------------   tinyurl.com/6ptm6bn - My Blog

OUrs is still in the freezer, she's only 3.5 months so ot going to bad.. we have running jokes about the 'mystery meat' though HAHA
Was going to get a lemon tree in a pot as DH loves lemons and in a pot we can take it with us.. aparently lemons love the stuff they give aswell, rich in potassium I think? or something like that. I think DH thinks I'm a little weird for keeping it but it did so much work!! |

My Mom had home births for her younger seven kids (us older four were born in the hospital). After her first home birth, my younger brother, who was nine at the time, went into the kitchen for a snack. He saw a cake pan covered with a cloth and thought, "oh! Cake!!" He certainly got an unpleasant surprise! 
We've not saved our kids' placentas. |

We kept DD's and planted under a kowhai tree at the family batch when she was about 5months. We will do the same with this one too. DH just went to the family batch and told me the tree is growing really great so thats good to know it didn't die!

True that! I'm definitely looking forward to the energy boost. Not having to worry about milk supply will be good too. Placenta pills along with the lactation cookies you get from PENZ and I'll have enough milk to feed the whole street! No one I have heard from who has consumed their placenta has had anything bad to say about it. It seems to be all benefits. And because you aren't actually eating it, just swallowing capsules, it isn't gross. Some people don't encapsulate, they just stir the powder into a smoothie, that sounds gross to me. |

We planted a tree with DS1 on the IL's farm..they have moved.
DS2&3 who are 6&5yrs old are still in the freezer

Oh my, I haven't heard of eating the placenta, I have to say that kinda grosses me out (as for lots of animals eating them, heaps of animals eat their own poop as well... animals are gross lol). I found it interesting to see the placenta after DD was born, but was quite happy for it to go to the hospital waste... each to their own though of course!

DS's is buried under a big plum tree in the back yard. But friends put their son's placenta in the freezer and for some unknown reason didn't get around to burying it for years. Every once in awhile they would defrost what they thought was a roast then realise it was the placenta and threw it back in the freezer. Hopefully they've buried it by now, I think the boy is about 12 by now. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We just planed our son's placenta last weekend to coincide with his Christening. Planted it under a Pohutakawa in a protected part of my Grandad's farm so know it won't be touched :) DH dug hole then just put whole box in beside plant then covered it up again! I read a brilliant blog last night about home made placenta capsules - they looked so innocuous and she found they gave her a huge energy boost. I'm quite keen to try this out myself now (well, once I get around to having babies)
She basically cut the cord off, shoved the rest in a blender, spread it over a dehydrator (but you could spread it thinly over a baking sheet in the oven) and then used a mortar &pestle to break it down.
